DUST-BOX.

I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,479, dated July 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES B. CLARK, of

Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dust-Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l is a top view of my improved dust-box with the lid or cover open. Fig. 2 is a sideview of same dust-box with cover closed. Fig. 3 is. a side View of same dust-box with cover open.

This dust-box,which forms the subject-matter of these Letters Patent, is designed to be used for collecting dust from. a carpet or floor in much the same way that a common dustpan is used, after which the user raises the dust box by its bail, which act closes the lid or cover of the dust box, so that the dusty contents are safely imprisoned, and the user can, in this condition, carry the dust-box and its contents to the barrel or other place of deposit for rubbish of this general sort. In emptying the dust-box of its contents the user retains his hold on the bail, but raises the rear end of the dust-box by grasping a small handle thereto attached for that purpose, which opens the lid or cover of the dustbox and puts the box in such a position that its contents fall out by gravity.

The letter a denotes what I call the dustcase, made usually of tin or other sheet metal, the shape of which is readily to be gathered from the drawings.

The letter I) denotes the lid or cover hinged to the dust-case, the lid and cover being so shaped and adapted to each other that when the lid is closed the two together form one sufflcicntly tight box.

The letter 0 denotes the bail,whi ch is jointed or pivoted to the sides of the dust-case as bails are usually attached 5 but its connection with the lid or cover is something peculiar. That lid or coverhas certain small eyes, 6', sliding on the bail, so that as the bail is raised or lowered the lid or cover is accordingly opened or closed.

The letter (Z denotes a handle attached at the rear end of the dust-box.

In using this device it is laid upon the floor with the bail raised and thrown back, which leaves the lid or cover open, and the user can then sweep the dust into the dust-box, after which the user raises the whole device by means of the bail, which bail is so jointed to the dust-box that the gravity of the dust-box causes the lid or cover to shut when the dustbox hangs suspended by the bail. The apparatus in this condition is of course readily carried to any convenient place for deposit ing the dust,when the user, retaining his hold upon the bail with one hand, raises the rear end of the dust-box by grasping the handle d, which opens the cover, and at the same time puts the device in a condition which allows the contents to fall out.

It will be observed that the shape of the dust box has something to do with its special utility, to wit: The dust box is substantially flat on one side, that it may lie on the floor, and it has a pocket at the rear for receiving and-holding the dust in transportation.

I claim as my improvement- 1. The combination of the dust-case. the cover, and the bail operating the cover, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2-. The combination of the cover, the bail operating the cover, and the dust-case operating to close the lid by gravity when suspended by the bail, all substantially as described. and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of a dust-box, u, having a substantially fiat side for lying on the floor, a lid, 1;, operating to close the box, and a bail, c, pivoted to the box at points on its side above the center of gravity of the box when suspended by the bail in a vertical plane, and whereby the box is held edge upward, all substantially as described.

l. The combination of a dust-box, a, a lid or cover, b, a bail,- c, pivoted to the box, and the loops or eyes b, fast to the cover, and sliding on the bail in opening and closing the box, all substantially as described.
