A principal object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved latching mechanism arranged with a view toward utmost simplicity in construction and operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an im proved latch mechanism particularly adapted for sliding doors and the like, having a simplified form of release readily releasing the latch from the inside or outside of the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved latching mechanism in which the energ stored up by a spring provides the force to release the latch bolt, and in which a simplified and improved form of locking mechanism is provided, settable to position the latch bolt in a locking position from the inside or outside of the door and releasable to accommodate release of the latch bolt from either the inside or the outside of the door.
These and other objects of the invention will appear from time to time as the following specification proceeds and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a diagrammatic view of a sliding door, looking at the door from the outside thereof and diagrammatically showing a latching mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention for locking and accommodating opening of the door;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged end view of the latching ice tured portion 'conforming to the reduced diameter flattened end portion of the lock spindle 20, to effect turning movement of the latching lever 17 upon turning of the lock spindle either by operation of the inside setting handle 21 or by the operation of an outside handle 26.
The latch bar 12 may serve to release latch bolts at each side of the garage door, but is herein shown as extending from the latch lever 17 toward one side of the door and as being pivotally connected to one end of a rocking lever 27, pivoted intermediate its ends to the door, and having the latch bolt 13 pivotally connected to the free end thereof, to be released from the guide tnack for the door (not shown) upon release of the lock spindle 20, in a manner well known to those skilled in the art and no part of the present invention so not herein shown or described further.
As shown in FIGURE 5, the outside handle 26 is coaxial with the lock spindle 20, and has interengagement with aflanged portion 29 thereof, coaxial with the axis of the lock spindle, for turning the lock spindle in a di'-.
rection to set the latch in a locked position. An escutcheon plate 30 extendsabout the inner end portion of a hub portion 31 of the handle 26 and abuts an inner annu lar shoulder 32 thereof and also abuts the end portion of an annular flange 33 extending from the flange 29 of the lock spindle '20. The escutcheon 30 is retained to the door 11, as by machine screws 35 having plane outer heads 36 engaging the outer surface of the escutcheon 32. The machine. screws 35 extend through the door 11 and through a lock plate 37, retained to the garage door mechanism, looking at the latching mechanism from the inside of the door and showing the mechanism in a latched condition;
FIGURE 3 is a view somewhat similar to FIGURE 2, but showing the latching mechanism in a released condition;
FIGURE 4 is an exploded view showing the lock plate, the release bar, the latching lever and inside setting handle in the order of assembly; and
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken through the latch mechanism of the invention showing the mechanism assembled on a sliding door.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, I have diagrammatically shown in FIGURE 1, a latching mechanism 10 mounted on a sliding door 11 herein shown as being an upwardly opening door particularly adapted for garages and the like. The latching mechanism 10 is shown as operating a latch bar 12, to release a latch bolt 13 from the guide track (not shown) for the door, to accommodate Opening of the door.
As'shown in FIGURES 2 and 3, the latch bar 12 is connected at its inner end to a connector 15, as by nuts andb'olts 16. 'The connector 15 is in turn pivotally connected to the outer end portion of a latching lever 17, as by a pivot pin 19. The latching lever 17 is mounted on a lock spindle 20, and is retained thereto as by an inside setting handle 21 mounted on a reduced diameter flattened end portion 22 of the spindle 20, and retained thereto as by a machine screw 23 threaded within the end of said reduced diameter flat end portion 22. The latching lever has an aperby nuts 39 threaded on the inner ends of said machine screws 35 into abutting engagement with the lock plate 37.
As shown in FIGURE 5, the nuts 39 have reduced diameter cylindrical portions 40 extending-inwardly from the heads thereof and engageable with elongatedslots 41 formed in a release bar 43 and form a slidable guide for said release bar, accommodating movement of said re-. lease bar to release the lock spindle 20, as will hereinafter he more clearly described as this specification proceeds; w i
The release bar 43 also has a central elongated slot 44 through which extends the lock spindle 20 and engageable with a locking member or key 45, herein shown as being recessed within the lock spindle 20 and as being pivotally connected thereto, as by a pivot pin 46. The locking member or key- 45 has engagement with a key slot 49, formed'in a central apertured portion 50 of the lock plate 37 for holding the spindle 20 from turning movement and thereby holding the door locked.
The locking member 45 extends within the hub 30 of the handle 26 and is released from the handle 26 by a cam 51 on the inner end of a key mechanism 53, herein shown as being threaded within the hub 31 of the handle 26 and suitably retained thereto. 7 1
The key mechanism 53 may be a well known form of barrel type key mechanism, which eflects the turning of the cam 51 when a key (not shown) is inserted in the key mechanism and turned in the required direction, asis well known to those skilled in the art, so not herein shown or described in detail.
' As shown in FIGURE 5, the cam 51 engages a tongue 55 projecting outwardly from' the lower outer end portion of the key 45 to effect the raising of the locking member or key 45 out of the key slot 49 upon turning of the key mechanism 53 by the usual key.
The locking member or key 45 may be released from the inside of the door by operation of the release bar 43, by pressing upwardly on said bar, to lift said key out of the key slot 49.
It will here be noted that the pivot pin 46 is cit-set from the transverse center of the locking member 45, so that the longest portion of said locking member extends along movement of'said latching lever into its released and latching positions.
A spring 60, herein shown as being a tension spring, is connected at one end to the ear 58 and at its opposite end to the lower machine screw '35 'to move the latching lever 17 to a released position by the energy stored up by the spring 60, upon turning of the handle 21 to set the lock spindle 2'0 and latching lever 17 in the latched position shown in FIGURE 2.
It may be seen from FIGURES '2, .3 and 5, that when it is desired to set the latching mechanism in a'locked position, that either the outside handle '26 or the inside setting handle 21 are turned to position the ear 59 against the stop 57. The locking member 45 will then drop into engagement with the key slot 49, assuming the key mechanism 53 has been turned to position the cam 51 in the released position shown in FIGURE 5. v
Upon release of the latching mechanism either by operation of the key operated mechanism turning the cam 51 to move the locking member 45 out of engagementwith the cam slot 49, or by upward sliding movement of the release bar 43 to lift the locking member 45 out of the key slot 49, the energy stored up in the spring '60 will pivot the latching lever 17 in a direction which .is shown in FIGURE 2, as being a counterclockwise direction. This will operate the latch bar 12 to withdraw the latch bolt from engagement with the trackway (not shown) for the door 11, and will accommodate free opening of the door.
While I have hereinshown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that various modifications and variations of the invention may be efiected without departing from the spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the invention defined by the claims appended hereto.
' I claim as my invention:
1. In a door lock, astationary lock plate, a lock spindle extending through said lock plate and mounted for pivotal movement with respect thereto, a handle secured to one end of said lock spindle and adapted 'to turn said lock spindle in a direction to set the lock in a latched position, a latching lever mounted on said lock spindle for movement therewith, a release member recessed within said lock spindle and extending therealong and ,pivotally connected to'said lock spindle for movement with respect thereto about a transverse axis, intermediate the ends of said release member and lock spindle, a key slot in said lock plate adapted to be engaged by said release member, for holding said latch spindle from turning movement, said release member being engageable with said key slot by gravity, inside operated mechanism engaging one end .of said release member .for movingsaid release member to a release position, key operated mechanism in said handle, a cam operated by said .key operated mechanism for engaging said release member and moving said release member out of engagement with said key .slot to release said lock spindle, and a spring connected between said lock plate and said latching lever for moving said latching lever in a release direction, upon movement of said release member out of engagement with said key slot.
2. In a door lock, a stationary lock plate, a lock spindle extending through said lock plate and mounted for pivotal movement with respect thereto, a handle secured to the outer end of said lock spindle and adapted .to turn said lock spindle in a direction to set the lock in a locked position, a latching lever on the inner end of said lock spindle, a spring connected between said lock plate and said latching lever and biasing said latching lever and lock spindle into a released position, a release member recessed within said lock spindle and extending therealong, means pivotally connecting said release-member to said lock spindle, intermediate the ends of said release member, for movement about an axis transverse .of the pivotal axis of said lock spindle, a key slot in said lock plate adapted to be engaged by said release member by gravity, to retain said lock spindle in a locked condition against the bias of said spring, and means operated from the inside of the door for releasing said release member, comprising a release bar sl-idably mounted on said lock plate for engagement with said release member, to move said release member out of said key slot and accommodate said spring to move said latching lever to a release position.
3. A door lock in accordance with claim 2, in which a release cam is pivotally mounted in said handle and has camming engagement with said release member to move said release member out of engagement with said key slot, to accommodate the release of the latch from the outside of the door.
4. In a'door look, a stationary lock plate, a lock spindle extending through said lock plate and mounted for pivotal movement with'respect thereto, a handle secured to one end of said lock spindle on the opposite end thereof from said lock plate and adapted to turn said lock spindle in a direction to set said spindle in a locked position, a release member pivotally mounted on said lock spindle intermediate the ends of said lock spindle and said release member for pivoting about an axis extending transversely of the axis of-said lock spindle, key operated mechanism mounted in said handle and having operative connection with the opposite end of said release member from said lock plate, to move said release member out of engagement with said lock plate and thereby accommodate free movement of said lock spindle into a release position, spring means biasing said lock spindle into a release position, and inside operated mechanism slidably mounted on said lock plate for movement in a direction transversely of the pivotal axis of said lock spindle and engageable with the opposite end of said release member from said key operated mechanism, for moving said release member into the release position independently of operation of said key operated mechanism.
