Description

(No Model.)
L. LAZARUS.
ALBUM SATGH'BL.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
UNIT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Louis LAZARUS, or ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
ALBTUM-SATCHEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,812, dated June 3, 1884.
Application filed April 7, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Louis LAZARUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Album-Satchels, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to that class of satchels used by travelers to carry their changes of linen, their toilet articles, &c.; and it has for its object to carry every convenience to the traveler-such as a mirror, hair combs and brushes, a tooth-brush and dentifrice, a lather-brush, soap, cup, and razor, clothes-whisk and hat-brushes, a box of blacking and brush, a collar-box, a cigar-case, aQdrinking-cup, a memorandum -book,- a money purse, and a watch-case-and to carry these in such a mannet that any one of them may be immediately found and taken out for use without searching among or in any way disturbing the other articles; also, to'temporarily fasten the satchel without using the key.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a satchel, hereinafter described and claimed,-
reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through one hinge, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same open.
A represents the body of the satchel, consisting of a series of boxes, B C D E, all of the same dimensions, except in thickness, which may vary to suit any special conditions. These boxes are provided with two hinges, F, each hinge being triple-jointed andhooked at its ends over -the sides of the satchel. By this means each hinge becomes a binding-strap to hold all the parts of the satchel together,
so that there is'much less tendency for the hinges to be torn off than when single hinges are used, and there is also less tendency to twist and break the backs of the individual boxes from their ends. Each box is partitioned into compartments, each compartment suited in form and size to hold .some particular articlesuch as a brush, a mirror, 8m. '-and an elastic strap, G, is tacked across each compartment to retain its occupant, which may be placed in or taken outby straining the strap.
H represents a watch-case, and I a moneypurse, both of which 1 Secure to the straps G, so that a watch will be carried without contact with any hard substance likely to bruise or break it in tl1e rough usage of travel, and coins will not jingle to betray their existence to the inquisitive outsider.
By means of the various boxes, hinged to gether as described, I imitate the form of an album in my satchel. When the satchel is in use and frequently referred to, it is inconvenient to lock and unlock it every time. I have therefore provideda system of double hooks, J, hinged to the innerboxes, G and D, to engage a series of nails or pins, K, in the boxes. By this means the boxes may be readily hooked or unhooked, and by each hook engaging two pins the ends of the boxes are practically strapped together, very much strengthening them, and relieving the strain on the locks on a journey. Any style of handle L may beattached to carry the satchel by,
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. In a satchel, the combination, with three or more boxes, each provided with partitions forming compartments, of hinges, each hav ing two or more joints, secured to the several boxes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with three or more boxes hinged together as a satchel, of aseries of double hooks, substantially as described,
and a series of pins, each double hook to engage two pins on different boxes, as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a series of boxes hinged together, each box having separate compartments and elastic straps'across them, substantially as described, of one or more bags secured to said straps, as and for the purpose specified.
, LOUIS LAZARUS.
