W. KAUFMAN.
COMBINED KNIFE SHARPENER AND FORK- No. 297,521. Patented Apr. 22, 1884.
WWITNESW v JILl/NVENTOR %w. 7 JMMM $4 ATTORN EYS N PETERS. Pnuwumo n im. Washington, 04c.
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM KAUFMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED KNlFE-SHARPENER AND FORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 297,521, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed September 17, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Fork and Knife-Sharpener; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the fork. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken through the slot. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken through the slot.
This invention has relation to a fork provided with a knife-sharpener; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates a table-fork, having the lateral portion b, between the tines and the shoulder of the fork, provided with a transversely-notched sharpening-block, c, triangular-shaped in cross-section, secured thereto or formed therewith. The transverse notches d (No model.)
middle portion and converges toward its ends, 0
where it joins the converging sides of short grooves f f, .which are deepest at the ends of the slit, and run out at the surface of the metal before reaching the shoulder or the tines of the fork. The knife-blade with the rough 5 edge is then inserted in the slit, and drawn through and down and out of the groove, .or either of them, several times, to finish the sharpening and remove the rough edge.
This device is cheap, simple, and effective, and is always ready for use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fork provided with the transversely V- notched sharpening-block secured thereto, and the longitudinal converging slit made therethrough, and terminating in converging grooves running out at the surface of the metal, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM KAUFMAN.
