Description

S. L. SINGLETON. Scythes.
No. 215,405. Patented Mayl3, 1879.
WITNESSES v 7 INVENT R;
flpar-argwg M ATTORNEYS I N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL L. SINGLETON, OF GHULAFINNEE, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HA'LF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES AIKEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCYTHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,405, dated May 13, 1879; application filed April 12, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. SINGLETON, of Ghulafinnee, in the county of Gleburne and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Scythes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makil'lg a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my scythe. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail, and Fig. 3 is a detail View thereof, showing the notches on the cutting-edge side.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of devices for fastening scythe-blades or similar articles to a handle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the handle or snath of a scythe, havin g near its end a flat recess, a, out therein, the remainder being round, and forming an inner shoulder, a, and an outer shoulder, a. ()n this is placed a skeleton sleeve formed of two circular bands, B B, connected by three bars, B and B B all made in one piece. This is so arranged that the inner edges of the bands B B will coincide with the shoulders a a the bar B lie over the center of the recess a, and the bars B B on the sides thereof, and the inner edges of said bars B coincide with the recess, as shown.
0 represents the blade, which may be of any desired form and size, according to the purpose for which it is intended. The blade 0 is provided with a shank, O, in the outer edge of which is made a notch, forming two inclined shoulders, I) b. This shank is inserted in the recess a under the bar B so that its shoulders I) b will fit on each side thereof when the blade is pressed down, and the bottom of the notch therein lie against the shoulder a A wedge, D, is then inserted under the bar B between the shank O and the shoulder a which, by being pressed inward, secures the blade firmly in place.
I The blade can easily be removed for sharpening and replaced again, or another blade put in its place.
The shanks of the different blades may have the notches formed either in their inner or outer edges, as desired, the wedge l) beingin all cases applied to the straight or uncut edge of the shank.
Fig. l of the drawings represents the blade (marked 4) attached to the scythe handle, which blade has the notching on the rear end instead of the front, as shown in the other blades.
What I claim as new, and desire to, secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The skeleton sleeve formed of the bands B B and connecting-bars B and B B all made in one piece, for the purposes set forth.
2. A blade, 0, formed with a shank, 0, provided with the inclined shoulders b b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the handle A, having recess a and shoulders a (F, the skeleton sleeve B B B the blade 0, with shank 0, having inclined shoulders I) b, and the wedge D, all constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL L. SIN GLETON.
