UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EVANDE R B. NEVVCOMB, OF OORYDON, IOWA.
WINDOW AND DOOR BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,437, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed October 13,1883. lModel.)
new and improved devicefor locking win- (lows, and also holding the bottom sash raised.
The invention consists in certain improvements in that class of fasteners for the meeting-rails of sashes in which the pivoted sweep on the lower sash engages one of a series of catches on the upper sash, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view of my improve window-locking device and portions of the sashes. Fig.2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line :0 :0. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on line 3/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same, showing it holding the lower sash raised.
A latch or lever, A, is pivoted on a plate, B, secured on the top of the bottom sash, O, which lever is provided at the outer end with a handle-lug, D, and at the inner end with an upright lug, E, having a beveled edge. The lever A is pivoted eccentrically-that is, out
' of the longitudinal central axis of the same.
the upper part of the plate G. On the upper part of the middle rail, F, a plate, J, is fastened, which is provided with a projection or lug, K, at its lower end. If the sashes are to be locked together, the lever A is turned so that the beveled edge of the lug E passes into the recess G, the beveled edge of the lug coming in contact with the beveled edge of the recess. As the two beveled surfaces slide on each other, they draw the'top of the bottom sash and the bottom of the top sash toward each other, and thus form a very close joint between the two sashes. If the lower sash is to be held raised a very short distance, the lever A is turned until its inner end rests upon the shoulder H of the plate G. If the lower sash is to be held raised, the lever A is turned in such a manner that its inner end rests upon the lug K, as shown in Fig. 4.
This window-lock is simple in construction,
and no spring is needed to insure its operabeveled edge and a shoulder, H, above said recess, and of a plate, J, near the top of the sash, provided with 2. lug, K, whereby the sashes may be locked when fully closed, or the lower sash be supported when raised to its fullest height or when only partially raised, substantially as herein shown and described.
