Granstedt, Stockholm, Sweden, assgnor to renco Aktrebolag, Stockholm, Sweden, a Swedish Joint-stock company Filed May 21, 1958, Ser. No. 736,741 Claims priority, applicationA Sweden June 5, 1957 s claims. (cl. ns1-ss) This invention relates to the wrapping of cigar bunches and 1t is an object of the invention-to make provisions for pasting the wrapper completely, or substantially completely, without unduly extending the path of travel of the Wrapper carrier over means for transferring an adhesive to the wrapper supported by said carrier.
Another objectl of my invention consists in the provision of means for supplying the wrapper, supported by said carrier, with an adhesive before reaching the conventional wrapping mechanism and without any tendency of wrinkling, damaging and displacing the wrapper when supported by said carrier.
Still another object of my invention consists in the provision of a method and means for pasting the wrapper stepwise to cover the wrapper with complementary stripes or zones of an adhesive on minimizing the space required for that purpose.
Still another object of the invention consists in the provision of means enabling the use of different grades of adhesive for pasting different portions of the wrapper.
Still another object of the invention consists in the provision of separate wrapper pasting apparatus which can be replaced or cut out of operation if desired.
Still another object of the invention consists in the provision of a method and means for pasting the wrapper by consecutive steps between which the Wrapper is subjected to a suction effect.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of means especially well adapted for'applying a long, narrow and distinct stripe of adhesive to a longitudinal edge portion of the wrapper.
With these and other objects, in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the portion of a cigar machine equipped with means embodying the invention;
y Figure 2 is an elevational view, partly in section, taken on the line lI-II of Figure 1;.
'Figure 3 is a plan view of. a mechanism embodying ther invention inwhich the wrapper'carrier and its operating mechanism are indicated,A by full lines infa .rst paste receiving position and by chain-dotted lines in a second or subsequent paste receiving position; and
Figure 4 is a plan view showing means for controlling the wrapper carrier when moving past the first paste receiving position to the second paste receiving position.
Referring to the drawing, the wrapper carrier comprises a suction head 1 secured to a hollow spindle 6, the hollow spindle 6 in turn being rotatably mounted in the free end of a hollow arm 2. The suction head 1,
the hollow spindle 6 and the hollow arm 2 communicate with each other interiorlyl thereof. The arm 2 is connected by a pivot 4 to another hollow arm 3 and communicates interiorly therewith. The arm 3 is secured l 2,939,463 Patented June '7,V 1960 to a hollow vertical spindle 5 which is rotatablygmountedv in a hollow post 48 and communicates interiorly with said arm 3 and with a suction pump such as is shown in my U.S. Patent No. 2,379,575. To the carrier spindle 6 is secured an arm 7 which carries a roller 8 inserted in a groove 9 in a plate 11 secured yto the machine frame 10. The spindle 6 carries a roller 12 which is inserted in a groove 13 in a plateV 14 secured to the frameltl.
To the spindle 5 is secured a `toothed segment 15 which'. meshes with a rack bar 16 which is slidablyV mounted. in a rectilinear guide-way 17 fixed to the machine frame.. The rack bar 16 is by a pin 18 pivotally connected to` one end of a rod 19. The other end of the rod 19 is4 by a pin 20 pivotally connected to one arm 21 of 'a'' bell crank lever secured to a rocking shaft 22 rotatably mounted in the machine frame. The other varm 23 of the bell crank lever carries a 'roller 24 which is insertedl in a curved groove 25 in a face cam 26 secured to the.
means may be of any iwell known construction, such as shown in my Patents Nos. 2,267,648 and 2,539,034, respectively.
'I'he wrapper is transferred from the cutting bed 28 lto, the wrapping mechanism 30 by the suction head 1 and' the suction head is guided by the groove 13 so that itV will move in a deiinite curved path simultaneously as it is controlled by the guide groove 9 so as to be rotated about the center of its spindle 6 in a definite manner simultaneously as the suction effect in the carrier is controlled by conventional means such as that shown 4in my Patent No. 2,379,575.
Between the cutting bed 28 and thewrapping mecha-- nism 30 is disposed a replaceable pasting apparatus 31 which comprises a rigidpaste transferring arm 33 which is adapted to move up and down in a paste container 32. The arm 33 has a relatively long horizontally projecting end 34 bent angularly to conform with the contour of a longitudinal edge of the suction head -1. The arm 33 is secured to a vertical ro'd 35 which is slidably mounted in a bracket 36 xed toV a channel iron 37 rigidly mounted on the machine frame 10. At'its bottom end the yrod 35 is by a pin 38 pivotally connected to the upper end of another rod 39 the bottom end of` which is, by a pin 40, pivotally connected to an arm 41 secured to the rocking shaft 22. The arm 41 carries a follower 42 inserted in the groove 43 of a face cam 44 secured to the drive shaft 27. The paste supplying apparatus 29 disposed on thevfurther side of the wrappingl mechanismA 30 is of `substantially the 'same construe-f tion/as the paste'supplying apparatus 31. It has apaste container 45 and a paste supplying arm 46 which is secured to a vertical rod 47 operated by a face cam (not shown) which is secured to the shaft 27 and is similar to the face cam 44 but displaced angularly relative to the latter.
During each cycle of operation of the machine the suction head 1 transfers a cut wrapper from the cutting bed 28 to the wrapping mechanism 30. The groove 25 of the c-am 26 has such a curvature that the suction head 1 will during its travel towards the wrapping mechanism 30 be arrested for a very short period above the pasting apparatus 31. Simultaneously the paste supplying arm 33 is elevated so that it will by its end portion 34 apply a narrow definitely shaped angular stripe of adhesive of substantial length to' one of the edges of the wrapper supported by the carrier 1. Thereby said edge of the wrapper will be pasted practically all the way from its tuck end, at T, to apoint at a desired distance from the head end,l at S. After the short rest in the positionM (Figure 4) above the pasting apparatus 31 the suction head will reassume its travel in the direction towards its turning point at E in which the head 1 supports the tuck end of the wrapper in a position above the wrapping mechanism 30 so that said tuck end will be accessible to thel `conventional tucking needle, e.g. as shown in U.S. Patent No. 2,754,481 adapted to catch and move said tuck end down against the cigar bunch enclosed in the Wrapping when said mechanism starts its operation. Simultaneously as the tuck needle applies the tuck end of the wrapper to the tuck end of the bunch the 'paste supplyin'g arm 46 is elevated and applies to one edge of the Wrapperra relatively thin and short stripe of adhesive which will form a continuation of the relatively long' and narrow adhesive stripe primarily applied by the `arm 33 and extends on to the flag or head end S of the Wrapper. Thereby the wrapper has been provided with a narrow and distinct adhesive stripe extending continuously or stepwise, all along the wrapper or at least approximately from one end of the wrapper to its other end and this result will be obtained without extending the path of travel of the suction head and increasing the/space, without any appreciable prolongation of the operating cycle and without the use of any large paste applying member'. The paste supplying 31 might, if desired, be cut out of operation, eg. b'y removing its paste transfering arm 33. The pasting apparatus 29 and 31 can hold paste of different grades if desired.
, It will be understood that I do not care to limit the scope of the invention to any particular form ofthe cigar and wrapper. Thus the terms head end and tuck end as used hereinbefore are merely illustrative and not' intended to denote any particular form or use.
