3 Claims. (Cl. 132-34) This invention relates to hair curlers and more particularly to apparatus for setting pin curls.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a substantially automatic system for setting the hair in pin curls in a simple and efficient manner.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a pin curler set of above type in which such pin curls can be readily arranged with one hand, in a speedy and effective manner.

Another object of the invention is to provide a threeway harp-shape hairpin, whereby the pin curl is held in three places tight and at to the scalp, and the hairpin can be removed from the pin curl by simply pulling it outwardly without involving any tangling of the hair.

Another object of the invention is to construct a novel three-way hair pin of one piece of stock.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a perfect pin curler set bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eicient in operation.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pin curler device made in accordance with the present invention in operative use;

Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational view, partly in section, of the device shown in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an enlarged front elevational view of the apparatus shown in Figure 2; and

Figure 4 is a top plan view of a hairpin forming another part of the present invention in operative association with a pin curl.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 to 3 thereof, a pin curler device made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a substantially cylindrical main body member 12 hereinafter referred to as the stationary body member, having a longitudinal bore 14 and counterbore 15 for rotatably receiving an elongated pin 16 and cylindrical member 18, respectively, and an auxiliary thumb and iinger gripping member that is'supported for relative rotation. v

The cylindrical member 18 is provided with an an nular groove 22 that slidably receives the inner extremity of a retractible pin 24 carried by the main body member 12 that releasably secures the auxiliary and main body members together. '9, 1960 ice ber in a hook or clip portion 32 which releasably secures a black of hair 33 therewithin in order to form a pin cur In operative use,the tapered end 34 of the stationary body member 12 is placed upon the head H immediately adjacent to the lock 33 of hair to be curled. This lock is then placed within the clip 32 and the auxiliary member 20 rotated by the thumb and linger of the operator about the longitudinal` vaxis of thev assembly relative tothe stationary body member 12.' The rotation of the auxiliary member 20 winds the pin curl 46 in the manner shown in Figure 1. It then'become's asimple matter to place one of the hair pins 36 illustrated in Figure 4 upon the curl to secure it in place. It will be noted that this clip includes a narrow neck portion 38, an enlarged arcuate portion 40, and an elongated pin 42 integral with and extending longitudinally through the 'center of the enlarged arcuate portion 40 and extends symmetrically V'along the length of the clip and terminates in a bulbous tip 44. In actual use, of the clip, or hair pin 36, the pin portion 42 underlies the under side of the pin curl 46 adjacent the scalp, while the elongated neck 38 and enlarged arcuate portion 40 overlies the opposite, or top side vof the pin curl, thus securing it in place upon the head H. This clip 36 is often called a three-way hairpin.r v f The operation of thefhailcurler 10 and hair pin 36 has been described and the construction of each unit makes it extremely easy for the operator to use. The pin 16 freely rotates within the longitudinal bore 14. The free end 55 of said pin 16 is provided with a frustum of a right circular cone, a truncated solid with tapered walls 56 and hemi-spherical end portion 57. The closed end portion 58 of the bore 14 is formed with a flat internal wall surface forming a liat bearing surface 59. The cylindrical member 18 is prevented from accidental separation from, the main body member 12 as the pin 24 carried by the body 12 travels freely within the groove 22, for said groove 22 is of greater width than the diameter of the pin, and of a depth whereby the end of the pin, projecting into the groove, cannot touch the bottom thereof. The groove 22 forms a retaining groove without causing friction with the pin 24. The elongated pin 16 operates in the bore 14 with its heini-spherical end portion 57 in contact with the flat surface 59, effecting a free end easy bearing action therebetween when pressure is applied to auxiliary member 20 by thumb and fingers of an operator thereof.

The operation of the three-Way hair pin, or clip 36, is extremely simple. The clip 36 is placed dat with portion 40 upon the first two lingers of the operators hand, the elongated pin 42 is pressed downwardly by the operators thumb to open the clip. I'he pin 42 is passed under the curl 46, leaving the neck portion 38 to pass over the top of the curl 46. When the thumb is released, the pin 42 holds the curl 46 in tight engagement with the neck portion 38 of the clip. The clip 36 holds the curl 46 flat upon the head of the person using same in three different places. The bulbous tip 44 on pin 42 protects the scalp from injury, making it safe and easy to use.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be lwithin the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1.
