Description

Feb.`10, 1942. P, J, GOODWIN HAIR CURLER Filed Jan. 21, 1941 ATTOR N EYS Patented Feb. 1o, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR CURLER Perry J. Goodwin, Palo Alto, Calif.
Application January 21, 1941, Serial No. 375,327
1 claim. (cl. 132-35) This invention relates to hair curlers, and its general object is to provide a cylindrical curling device that includes teeth arranged in cylindrical formation for not only separating and combing out locks of hair of a predetermined quantity from the scalp to be curled, but the teeth also act for securing the free end portion of the lock to the device, so as to prevent casual slippage of the lock therefrom, while making the initial turn of the device when winding the lock thereon, yet the device can be easily removed from a formed curl, without disarranging the latter, thus it will be seen that my device materially expedites the formation of curls or ringlets and such can be accomplished with minimum effort on the part of the user.
A further object is to provide a curling device that is capable of forming curls of several sizes, and it is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely eillcient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the curling device that forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken therethrough.
Figure 3 is a view illustrating my.devlce in use.
Referring t0 the drawing in detail, it will be noted that the device is made into a single unit from hard rubber, light weight metal or any material suitable for the purpose, to provide a relatively Wide hollow cylindrical body I having an interiorly thickened end portion 2 which has formed thereon a relatively narrow cylindrical extension 3 providing an exterior shoulder 4 at its juncture with the body, as clearly shown in Figure 2.' i
The extension is slotted at regular intervals,
longitudinally from its outer end for a portion of its length with the slots disposed in close proximity about the entire circumference of the extension to provide a cylindrical group of relatively narrow comb teeth 5 having beveled outer ends, and the opposite end portion of the body is likewise slotted to provide a like group of comb teeth 6, but the diameter of the group 6 is greater than that of the group 5, due to the relative size of the body and extension 3. The remaining portion of the body provides a handle for gripping the device during the use thereof. However, it can be gripped at either end, it depending of course upon which group of teeth is to be used.
In the use of my device, the hair is rst dampened and thence the teeth at one end of the device, it depending whether a large or small curl is desired, are drawn through the hair from the scalp to separate and comb out a lock therefrom to be curled. When the outer end portion of the lock is reached, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, the device is not removed. from the lock, but is then rotated toward the scalp, for winding the lock about the teeth to form the curl, as shown in full lines in Figure 3, and nally the device is slipped out of the curl which is then pinned in the usual manner and allowed to dry.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parte, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A hair curling device comprising a relatively wide hollow cylindrical body slotted longitudinally from one end for a portion of its length to provide a group of comb teeth and the remaining portion of the body providing a handle, a relatively narrow hollow cylindrical extension formed on and projecting outwardly from the opposite end of the body to provide a shoulder at the juncture of the extension with the body, said extension being slotted longitudinally from its outer end for a portion of its length to provide a second group of comb teeth, and either group of teeth adapted for separating and combing out a.
lock of hair from the scalp and for securing the outer end portion of the lock to the device whereby upon rotating the device toward the scalp the lock is wound about the teeth for forming a curl.
