GEORGE \V. JOPSON, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
KEY-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,231, dated January 22, 1824. V Application filed June 2, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'Grnonern W. JorsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meriden, in the county of- New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key- Rings; and I'do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification This invention has for its object tofurnish an improved key-ring, and it is designed more especially as an improvement on my prior patents; and it consists in providing a key-ring I or similar article at one end with a perforation, through which passes a headed pin having an oblong portion under-the head, which rests upon one side of the perforation in the ring, said pin being secured to the ring by means of a washer, the end of the pin being upset-or riveted. Under the head of the pin, and onthe opposite side of the ring and the washer, is another washer or plate having a key-hole slot, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side view-of my improved ring, showing it locked. Fig. 2 is a view of the ring, showing it unlocked and in a position to be opened. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same, and Figs. 4 and 5 are de tailed views.
A represents the body of the ring, which is made of a single piece of flat metal, -so that it can be bent to one side. This ring may be constructed of any suitable shape, and the end of this ring a is enlarged and provided with a perforation. This end a is shaped so asto correspond with the-opposite end, a, when the parts of the ring are together.
- To one side of the end a is secured a circular washer, B, which is attached thereto by means of the pin or. pivot C, as will be hereinafter described. This pivot or pin C is provided with an enlarged head, on the under side of which is formed a step or enlarged portion, 0, having parallel sides and rounded ends, as shown. From this portion of the pivot projects the stem 0', as shown.
D represents the washer, which is adapted. to be secured on the opposite side of the end of the ring from the washer B, and this washer is provided with a key-hole slot, -as shown.
Tounite the parts to each other, the pin, as hereinbefore described, is passed through the circular end of the key-hole slot, the stem 0 being of the same thickness as the washer, so as to rest upon the side of the ring adjacent to this washer. Thestem c of the pivot or pin C extends through the perforation in the ring and the washer B, and the parts are secured toeach other by upsetting the end of the pin upon the washer B. Vhen the parts are secured to each other, as hereinbefore described, the washer or plate with the key-hole slot may be slipped upon the pivot, s0 asto be off the center, and when so placed the parts of the ring may be separated so as to open the ring, and when it is desirable to close the ring, the ends being vplaced in a line with each other, the washer for the key-hole slot pressed 7 5 to one side, so that the enlarged portion of the pin, with its rounded end, will rest within the circular portion of said slot, and when the washer is turned it will be held centrally upon said pin. I
By means of the construction hereinbefore described I am enabled to produce a key-ring without any projecting points, and the parts, being constructed as hereinbefore described, are not liable to bedisplaced accidentally.
When the parts composing this key-ring are united to each other, the oblong portion of the slot will be on a line with the end of the keyring, so that when the movable washer is pressed to one side the ring may be passed 0 over the end of said washer. I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved key-ring formed by com- 5 bination of an open ring, A, having at one end a projectingportion or washer, B, attached by a pin having an enlarged oblong portion under its head, and a washer with a key-hole l the parts being organized substantially as slot, the parts being organized substantially 1 shown, and for the purpose set forth. 10 as described. i In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 2. In combination with the open ring lierepresence of two witnesses. inbefore described, having an enlarged end which overlaps the adjacent portion of the: \Vitnesses: ring, the pin 0, having enlarged portion 0, and stem 0, and washer D, having a key-hole slot, 1
