.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT ZINSMAIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ofa plan view of the lock. Fig. 2' is a perspective view of the keeper. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the keeper. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base-plate of the keeper and its slide. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of my lock, looking at its mechanism from the opposite side of Fig. 1.
This invention has relation to alarm-locks for doors; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with a notched keeper and a winding-drum on the key-shaft, of an angular vertically-reciprocating lock-bolt having vibratory play; in the combination, with these devices, of an alarm and a latch and in the adjustable notched catch-plate of the keeper, having a scale marked thereon, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter I? designates the lock-case.
A indicates an ordinary alarm mechanism such as is employed in common alarm-clocks, wherein a is the bell; b, the hammer; c, the spring, and d the key post whereon it is wound. On the key-shaft is the main wheel 6 and a cylinder bearing or drum, to which is attached a chain, 13.
0 represents a vertically-reciprocating boltbar, having the projection Q at right angles to its length, said projection being designed to engage the keeper. This bolt 0 has some vibratory play inwardly, limited by the springguide J. The chain Bis conected to the lower end of the bolt by means of a clamp sorew, h, or other common fastening.
M represents a common spring-bolt for ordinary use, operated by means of a shaft, 0, having a lug, projection, or arm, k, engaging a recess, Z, in the bolt. This bolt M serves to hold the door closed when the locking-boltO is not in use, the latter being drawn back by the rod L. \Vhen it is found desirable to open the door from the inside, the operator must pull back the rod L, which will draw forward the vertical bolt 0 and disengage its'toe Q, from the keeper. The door-knob is then turned, and by means of the arm k the bolt M will be drawn forward and the door ready to open without giving an alarm. \Vhen the door is closed, entrance to thehouse cannot be attained without using the key, and in so doing the bolt 0 may be raised until its toe Q reaches the notch n of the keeper, when the door may be opened; but as soon as the operator removes his hand from the key the alarm will be given by the falling of the bolt 0 or unwinding of the chain. Should the person not turn the key a sufficient number of times to raise the toe of the bolt 0 to the notch n of the graduated keeper and push the door to open it, the said toe will engage the notches on the inside of the keeper, and the bolt, as the person e11- deavors to make it pass the obstacle will, by the slightest downward movement, cause an alarm.
Kis a night-latch arranged in the upper part of the case, and adapted to be pushed over the upper end of the bolt 0 to prevent said bolt from being raised.
Z represents a keeper or catch designed to engage the toe Q of the locking-bolt O. This keeper is formed with a vertical way, m, for said toe, protectedby the catch-flange p, in which is formed, near its upper end, a notch, a, of sufficient size to permit the passage of the end of the toe Q of the bolt Usually the keeper consists of two partsa base-plate, E, and a catch-plate, G. The baseplate E is made with apertures s, for the passage of fastening-screws, and with a vertical groove or slot, t, in which is located an adjustable block, I, which is enlarged or flanged in rear to engage the walls of the slot t. In the block I is made a threaded perforation to engage the fastening-screw-V, which passes through the catch-plate G, and serves to hold said plate to the base-plate E. The catch-plate is thus made adjustable on the base-plate in the vertical direction, and the adjustment is regulated by means of a vertical scale, z, on the adjustable plate, indicatingthe number of revolutions required to be made by the key in order to turn the key-shaft sufficiently to raise the toe Q of the bolt G to the notch a.
The lock is placed on the inside of a door opening inward, and around the winding-shaft, which receives the key, may be arranged a spring, which will engage the key, and when the door is opened push the key out of engagement with the shaft, allowing the alarm to be set in action. When the key is turned, rotating the key-shaft and raising the locking-bolt, the spring a of the alarm, which is connected to the key-shaft, is at the same time wound up. The alarm is therefore set whenever the locking-bolt is raised, and as soon as the key is disengaged from the shaft the alarm will be sounded, and the locking-bolt at the same time allowed to fall.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a lock, the combination, with a vertically-reciprocating angular locking-bolt, of 25 a key shaft connected to said bolt and to the spring of an alarm, whereby when the shaft is turned to raise the locking-bolt the alarm is wound up, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the slotted base- 0 plate E, of the keeper-plate G, having the notch n and the scale 2, the screw-block in the slot of the base-plate, the fastening-screw V, v the winding-drum on the shaft, and the angular vertically-reciprocating bolt connected by a chain to the said drum, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the vertically-re- 'ciprocating angular locking-bolt, of the winding-shaft and alarm, the chain connection, guide-spring, night-latch, and notched keeper, substantially as specified.
