Burglar Alarm. No. 100,033. Patented March 15, 1870.

Letters Patent No. 100,933, dated March 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it'kuown that I, REUBEN SEALER, of Madison, in the county .of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my invention with the lid open.
Figure 2 is ,a sectional view, showing the method of operatin g the sliding bar.
My invention relates to alarm safes, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices designed to form aconvenient and eflicient safe for keeping money and valuables in dwellings, 8:0.
The letter A of the drawings designates the body of my safe, usually constructed of cast-iron, and about one foot square. It is intended to be screwed from the inside permanently to the wall of the room, so that it cannot be taken up and carried oti.
B designates the lid hinged to the body, and provided with alock and key.
An alarm, C, is attached to the lid, and operated by clock-work.
The satety-attaclnnent consists in-the snperabundant means provided for setting off this alarm.
Aside from the lock and key above mentioned the lid is fastened down by a catch, (1, arranged therein, and operated by turning a small knob, on the outside.
A number of similar knobs,'k 7.", are arranged to the right and left of the knob in such amanner that any one nnacquainted with the position of this knob would in all probability turn one of the knobs k k instead; bnt each of the knobs 70 It operates as a lever to move the sliding bar L, attached to the lid by the staples mm, and arranged to throw oif the pawl s from the ratchet-wheel B, when moved in the direction indicated by the arrow.
The sliding bar is attached to the lid at the end opposite the pawl by means of a spring.
The pawl s has no spring, and is arranged to turn about a pivot, 1, whose position is horizontal when the lid of the safe is open. Hence, in winding the alarm, the weightof the pawl will keep it in the proper position 0n the ratchet-wheel; but when the lid is closed the position of the pivot'i willbe vertical, and hence the weight of the pawl cannot operate to keep it on the ratchet-wheel. The alarm therefore, when once set in mot-ion by turning one of the knobs k It, will run down.
\Vhat I claim as my inventiomaiid desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is-
The alarm-safe herein described, having in the lid thereof the weighted pawl s and sliding bar L, arranged to set oh the alarm when operated by any one of the keys or knobs It is, made similar to the catchknob z, and arranged in any number on either side thereof.
In testimony that I claim the. above I have hereunto snbscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
REUBEX SHALER.
