Be it known that I, WILLIAM IEvIN, of th town and county of Anoka, of the State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots; and I do hereby declare the same to be describedin the following speciiication and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures l and 2.are opposite side views, and Fig. 3 a vertical and longitudinal section of a Fig. 4 is a transverse and horizontal section taken through its vamp and lacing-dies.

The nature of my improvement is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.

rIhe boot, constructed as represented in the drawings, has its leg, A, open on its front from the instep upward about half the length of the leg, the iront of such leg above such opening being closed. The opposite edges of the opening are curved, as shown at a b c in Figs. 1 and 2. Furthermore, the vamp B is extended upward above the instep to the top of such opening and within the leg or between the sides thereof, the vamp being, near its edges, sewed to such sides, so that portions of such leg sides shall lap on the outer surface of such vamp and constitute iiies O C,which I provide with a lacing, D, and holes, buttons, or hooks E, to coact therewith in drawing together such flies over the said upward extension of the instep, when it is folded in upon the leg of a `person wearing the boots. By such means a boot may be constricted or contracted in its leg at its front about and for a short distance above the ankle of the leg of a person who may be wearing such boot, the part of the leg that may be above the iiies not being contractible.

only such seam going generally half or about half way down such front from the top or mouth of the boot-leg. i

I am aware that a boot has been devised which has a slit in front, and in such slit is placed a tongue, which is stitched back ofthe edges of the slit and to the top 'edge of the vamp. In this construction the lower edges of the quarter are seamed their entire length to the vamp. In my boot no separate tongue is used, but the vamp B extends entirely up the whole length of the slit, and is secured back of the edges thereof and at the top. The quarters F are not secured the entire length of their edges f, but stop at f, leaving on each' side of the vamp B any, C, the lower end, c', of which is detached from the vamp, as shown. By having this lower end, c', unattached to the vamp, as the iiies are pulled together over the Vamp, they draw over the latter, and do not pull and pucker it. By this arrangement the vamp cau extend all the way up, as shown, since the vamp simply is squeezed like an ordinary shoe-tongue, the flies O corresponding to the sides in an ordinary shoe.

I claim- A boot of the kind described, consisting of the leg A, having the slit in front, and the quarters F. the vamp B, running the entire length of the slit, secured to the leg A at the top of the slit, along the sides of the slit back of its edges, and partly to the lower edges, f,

of the quarters F, the iiies C, around the vamp B at the slit, and having their lower ends, c',

detached from the vamp, whereby, when the iiies are pulled together, they come over the vamp, as set forth.
