Description

A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. BALL, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,729, dated December 25, 1883.
Application filed June 14, 1883.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, CHARLEs H. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in box-fasteners, in which a lid is locked by means of concealed fastenings, the object of the fastening, as I make it, being to guide the said lid into proper position relatively to the sides ofthe box, and to form a secure lock for the same by simply closing` the said lid upon the box. I attain these objects by mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my shipping-box, showing a locking-bolt and my improved striking-plate and a rabbeted lid, and a cleat on the back of the box. Fig. 2 is a plan of the under side of the lid. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line A, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on line G, Fig. 1, showing the locking-bolt and my improved striking-plate. Fig. 5 is also a sectional view on line D, Fig. 2.
In Fig. l the lid E is represented set away toward one end of the box, in order to show that the lid when released is wholly detachable from the body of the box, and in order to show the fastening-bolt, which is located on the under side of said lid, a portion is represented as cut away. The lid E is also represented in an inclined or open position for the purpose of displaying the striking-plate G, (which plate G is the main feature of my invention,) the channeled portion of which engages the bolt F in the closing of the bornand the said channeled portion of the pla-te G is beveled downward and inward on two or three sides, as will be best suited to the form of the end of the fastening-bolt F used. The
bolt F has a movement transversely to the lid, and relatively to the lid it is rigid in all other directions. The obvious effect or action of this mechanism is to centralize the lid E in the closing of the box, and in combination with mechanism adapted for holding the back edge of the lid to form a secure and conveniently-operating locking and holding device.
The locking and unlocking of the box is effected as follows: In the lower part ofthe striking-plate G is a hole, M, extending through the plate and through the side ofthe box. At the termination of its downward motion the bolt F enters this hole and locks the box, and to again unlock the box it is only necessary to passvthrough the hole M from the outside any suitable instrument and press the bolt F inward and out of the hole M, all in a wellknown manner.
I am aware that prior to my invention shipping-boxes have been made with various kinds of sliding andswinging bolts, and used in combination with strikingplates with but one beveled surface. I do not claim such bolts, either singly or in combination with such plates; but
Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a shipping-case in which a detachable lid is locked by means of concealed fastenings, and unlocked by an instrument passing throughan opening in the 75 case and operating a fastening-bolt carried by the lid, of a striking-plate, G, having a channel which is beveled inward and downward on two or more sides for receiving and guiding the head of the bolt F in its descent to- 8o y ward the hole M in the ease, substantially as shown and described.
