Flat and side fold bags, with two stuck seams have been produced both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction, but only on different specialised types of machines. For the machine on which flat bags are produced in the longitudinal direction, the paper web is cut out on both sides so that edges on both sides can be turned over and provided with adhesive. When the blank is folded, the back wall is then stuck to these turned over side edges. This type of bag has proved itself particularly suitable for the machine packing of small filling materials and its use is preferred, because the entire front and back surface of the bag can be printed on and because, moreover, easy opening of the bag in the filling machine is possible, as the bag can be more readily opened on account of the reinforcement on both sides at the edges.
It is also known to produce such a bag in the transverse direction, namely by making a fold from the base edge of a blank, over which the first fold is subsequently turned and the second fold with the longitudinal strips of adhesive is laid.
For the two kinds of bag, use has hitherto been made of two separate machines, which are different in construction and each of which permits of restricted use for the one or other type of bag only.
The present invention allows flat and side-fold bags of the said two different kinds to be produced at will on the same machine. Thus the machine has a wider range of possible uses and, moreover, bags can be produced which could hitherto be made only on specialised machines.
According to the invention, for this purpose, the folding mechanism of the machine is so arranged that bags can be produced on it in the transverse or in the longitudinal direction, as required. The machine accordingly has a folding-blade cylinder, a fold-gripper cylinder, a guide cylinder and a delivery cylinder disposed one after another for working consecutively on the blank. The guide cylinder and the delivery cylinder may be furnished with gripper devices and fold-forming means such that it is possible to produce either a bottom fold for bags to be produced in the direction of travel or with two side folds for bags to be produced transversely of the said direction.
Further details of the invention are to be gathered from the examples illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

I The blank 1 (Figure 1) has been drawn ofi from a reel of paper which is worked upon and divided into single blanks by cutting mechanism not illustrated. Each blank 1 is then conveyed to a folding-blade cylinder 2 and foldegripper cylinder 3. The folding blade 4 on the cylinder 2 presses the blank 1 into thefold-grippers 5 on the cylinder 3 and, as the blank thus initially folded is advanced, it is folded over at a roller 6 along the line 7a (Figure 2) and is taken over by the grippers 7 in a guide cylinder 8 and transferred to grippers 9 in a delivery cylinder 10 which deposits the finished bag on a delivery table 11. Adhesive-applying mechanism 1418 serves in this case to apply adhesive coatings 7b and 7c (Figure 2) to respective turned-over edges.
If two-seam flat bags are to be produced in the transverse direction, the blank 12 of Figure 4 is conveyed in the same way as the blank 1 and is folded in along the line 13 by the folding blade 4 in the cylinder 2 and the fold-grippers 5 in the cylinder 3. An adhesive-applying bar 14 carried by the cylinder 2 receives adhesive from a roller 16 dipping into an adhesive trough 18 by way of an intermediate roller carrying a transfer bar 15. The thickness of the adhesive applied can be regulated by a doctor 17. As the cylinder 2 rotates, the bar 14 then applies the strip of adhesive to the blank at 19 (Figure 4). The partly folded blank 12 is next taken over by grippers 7 which are disposed on the guide cylinder 8 at a distance, in advance of the associated folding blade 20, corresponding to the subsequent width A of the bag (Figure 4). The blank and the delivery cylinder 10 are so adjusted that fold grippers 21 on the latter cooperate with the folding blade 20 of the guide cylinder 8. By this cooperation, the blank 12 is folded along the edge 22 (Figure 4). The grippers 7 in the cylinder 8 then release the blank 12, the folded bag being delivered to the table 11.
The grippers 7 may be arranged to be adjustable in relation to the folding blades 20.
As will be understood, the transversely produced bags may be provided at their filling openings either with a turned-over edge 23 (Figure 4) or with a projecting flap. Also, with the blank 12, the folds 13 and 22 may be displaced so that the bag is stuck at its middle. It is also possible, by providing a second adhesive-applying bar 14, to produce the bag blank and the edge portion 23 from two different materials, if the mechanism is adapted for this purpose. Furthermore, it is possible to provide another side fold inside the turned-over edge 24 (Figure 4) This edge is likewise provided with adhesive in known manner.
In the arrangement of Figures 6 and 7, the foldingblade 20 is omitted from the guide cylinder 8. Instead, an additional cylinder is provided having a folding blade 25 which cooperates with the fold-grippers 21 on the delivery cylinder 10, the transverse fold 22 (Figure 4) being formed by the blade 25 and grippers 21. Rotating fingers 26, which run at a higher peripheral speed than the cylinder 10, turn over the upstanding folded edge and the transverse fold thus formed is rolled by the pressing roller 27. The finished workpiece is then conveyed by the grippers 21 to the delivery table 11. In this arrangement, the position of the grippers 9 around the periphery of the cylinder 10 is adjustable, while the grippers 7 in the cylinder 8 may be fixed.
In the arrangements illustrated by way of example, the cylinder 3 is provided with two fold grippers 5, the cylinder 8 with two grippers 7 and, in Figure 1, with two blades 20, and the cylinder 10 with two fold grippers 21 and two grippers 9.
