M. ANDlS Jun 30, 1959 HAIR CLIPPERS -HAVING INTERCHANGEABLE COMB PLATES Filed Sept. 12, 1956 I N V EN TOR.

United States Patent Application September 12, 1956 Serial No. 609,456
11 Claims. (61130-200) Thisvinvention relates to improvements in hair clippers having interchangeable com'b plates. .Andis .Patent No. 2,168,642 is an example of prior art devices of this charenter.
The device :of the present invention .is provided with an improved mechanism. for releasably attaching interchangeable comb plates to the clipper case. In the device :-of the present invention the :several comb plates and the bed portion of :the clipper case are provided with detent parts which are -engageableas the parts are .moved ilaterally. When engaged the detent :parts securely position and firmly amount :the comb :plate on :the .clipper .case. In its mounted position the comb plate .is .operatively associated with the shear blade which is semi-permanently connected to the motor armature. The shear blade is common to the several interchangeable comb plates and remains secure .to the motor armature on removal of the comb plate.
In the device of the present invention the respective detent parts are desirably relatively yieldable, .at least one of said parts having a cam surface by which it is placed under tension in the course of part engagement whereby to impositively lock thecombplate to the clipper case bed.
Different embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the drawings. In both disclosed embodiments, however, the comb plate is provided with a slide bar having and opening and an overhanging lip. A slideway provided on the clipper bed has a hook which is receivable in said opening and interengages with the lip.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be more apparent from an examination of the following disclosure in which:
Fig. l is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken through the head of a hair clipper embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the bed portion of the clipper case, the comb plate being removed and being shown in Fig. 3 which is a plan view of the inside mating surface thereof.
Fig. 4 is a view in spaced apart perspective of the respective slide and slideway parts which are mounted on the clipper case bed and the comb plate and which are provided with the detent parts which interlock the comb plate to the clipper case bed.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross sectional view taken along the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the bed portion of a modified embodiment of the invention.
Fl. 7 is a perspective view of the hook clip which seats in the recess formed in the bed plate of the device of Pi 6.
Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing the parts laterally displaced in position for disengagement.
The clipper .case'10 contains the usual vibratory'motor (not shown) and armature 9 to which the shear blade driving arm 11 is connected. The shear blade 12 may have a conventional articulate connection at 1-3 to the driving arm 11.
Operatively associated with the shear blade 12 are interchangeable comb plates, a typical one of these being illustrated in the drawings at 13. The several comb plates differ in the thickness and spacing of their teeth 14 whereby to adapt the :device for various clipping functions.
When mounted the respective comb plates must be very accurately registered with the shear blade '12 which is semi-permanently connected to the driving arm "151 and remains with the main body of the clipper notwithstanding removal of the comb plate. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1
through 5, the clipper case has a 'bed'portion 15 to which 21, 22 of the channel shaped member 16 is such as to permit limited sliding movement .of the tongue 25 .of slide '26 therebetween.
From the material of web 23 a hook'28 'is stricken out as shown in Fig. 4. The hook '28 interengages with the lip 2-9 which overhangs the aperture 36 in slide 26. "Hoojk 28 and lip 29 constitute releasably engageable detent parts by which the comb plate is demountably attached to the clipper head.
To assemble the comb plate 13 to the clipper case the comb plate is positioned over the bed thereof with tongue 25 substantially in contact with the end margin of flange 21. Aperture 30 in the slide :26 will then receive therethrough the hook 28 of channel member 16 as shown in Fig. 9. Slide 26 is then moved inits slideway in a direction to advance tongue 25 toward flange 22 and cause the hook 28 to engage behind the lip 29. The fully engaged position of the parts is shown in Fig. 5. Tongue 25 now contacts the end of slideway flange 22 which positively defines the interlocked position of the parts. Note that the hook 28 and lip 29 have mating surface which are correspondingly inclined with respect to their direction of relative movement. Hook 28 is resiliently yieldable. Because of the inclined position of the parts, hook 28 is required to yield resiliently in passing over the lip 29, thereby placing the hook under tension whereby to bias the parts together under the tension of the hook in their fully interlocked position as shown in Fig. 5.
To remove the comb plate 13 it is simply moved to the left as shown in Fig. 9, thereby camming the hook 28 against its resiliency and releasing the hook and lip from engagement. When tongue 25 contacts the edge of flange 21, aperture 30 will be aligned with the hook 28, thus permitting the comb plate to be removed and replaced, if desired, by another comb plate having similar detent parts mounted thereon.
In Figs. 6 through 8 a modification of the clipper case bed is illustrated. In this embodiment of the invention no separately fabricated channel piece, such as element 16 hereinbefore described, is needed. The slideway, etc., is fabricated integrally in the clipper case bed. For this purpose bed 33 is provided with paired upstanding lugs 34, 35. The bed 33 is provided with a recess 36 into which the clip 37 may be mounted by means of the screws 38. Clip 37 has a spring hook 39 formed thereon, the hook 39 being comparable to hook 28 in the embodiment hereinbefore described.
I claim: 1. In a hair clipper havinginterchangeable comb plates, the combination with a clipper case having a bed portion including an elongated slideway, of a removable comb plate having a slide, said slideway being laterally open to admit said slide in a direction transverse to its sliding movement therealong, said'bed portion and comb plate having complementary detent parts which interengage in the course of'said sliding movement whereby to interlock said comb plate to said bed portion.
