Description

D. F. ELMER, OF HAYDENVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH-KEY AND GUARD-BAR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,846, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. F. Emma, of Haydenville, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combined VVatch-Key and Guard-Bar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure l is an outside longitudinal view, natural size7 of my improved watch key and guard bar representing it with the sheath drawn back off the key. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the saine, partly in section, on yan enlarged scale, representing it with the sheath drawn over the key.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Wy invention consists in a novel mode of combining the outer movable sheath with the inner tube at the'end of which is the key, whereby the construction of the combined key and bar is rendered more simple, and it is made stronger and less liable to get out of order.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
a, is the inner tube of brass or other inferior metal at one end of which is the key le. b, is a larger tube of similar metal fitted tightly to the exterior of the tube a, and extending from near the opposite end of that tube tov that at which the key is formed to within a short distance from the middle of the length thereof. This tube b, is secured. firmly to the exterior of the tube a, by soldering or otherwise its purpose being to form a shoulder for the movable sheath to abut against.
c, is a shell of superior metal having its outer end made with a knob, or finished ofi in any other form and having attached securely to its inner end, the central band d, to which the guard chain is attached. This shell is secured iirmly to the tube I), by sol dering or otherwise. e, is the movable sheath fitted to slide and turn freely upon the inner tube a, and having an L-shaped slot fg, formed in it to tit a pin or projection 7L, which is secured to and projects from t-he inner tube a, the longer portion f, of the said slot running lengthwise of the sheath and the shorter portion g, running directly around it from the inner end of the longer portion f. This sheath is tightly and securely incased with a shell z', ot' superior metal terminating like the shell c, in a knob or other corresponding form with an open outer end, said shell covering and concealing the slot fg, and being capable of sliding wit-hin the band (Z.
Then the pin L, is in the shorter portion g, of the slot fg, the end of the sheath e,- is flush with the end of the key and the lsheath is locked in that position but by turning the sheath with the ingers to bring the straight portion f, of the slot opposite to the pin 7L, and pushing the sheath into the band CZ, as far as the shoulder at the inner end of the tube b, the key is made to project as far out of the sheath as is necessary for use. By drawing the sheath out again as far as the slot and pin permit, and turning it to bring the pin into the short portion g, of the slot the sheath is locked with the key concealed.
I do not claim broadly the invention of a combined watch key and guard bar with a movable sheath to thekey; but
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combined watch key and guard bar constructed as described with a sheath having an L-shaped slot itted to the key tube and to a pin or projection thereon substantially as herein described.
