Description

(No Model.) I I r A. G. & L. H. MQOOMB.
PLANTIPROTEOTOR.

' WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ALBERT G. hiCCOll/IB AND LINDEN H. MOGOMB, OF COLUMBUS GROVE, OHIO.
:PLANT-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iliatent No. 288,251, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed February 10, 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT G. McCoM and LINDEN H. McGoMB, of Columbus Grove, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Plant-Protectors; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to" the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved plant-protector. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank forming the cap, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stake.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to devices for protecting young plants against extreme cold or heat; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a device which may be taken apart, so as to occupy the I smallest possible space when packed for trans portation, and which may be manufactured at such a low cost that it may be used as a means of advertising, as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a piece of paper, thin wood, or other flexible material cut in the shape of a semicircle and having 'asmall portion cut out at the center, forming a semicircular notch, 13.
This semicircular piece A may be folded in the shape of a conical cap, the radial straight edges of the same overlapping each other, where they may be secured upon each other by means of glue or cement, which may be applied to the lower edge, 0.
A narrow strip, D, of paper or other material may be glued or otherwise fastened upon the upper surface of the cap, near edge 0', extending radially from the center and serving to mark the limit for the overlapping edge, and the two edges are furthermore held together by the upper slitted or slotted end E of the stake F, which holds the cup in position, being planted in the ground. The upper end E of this stake is slotted longitudinally, and
clasps over the two overlapping edges of the cap, which are secured in it by means of two tacks or small nails, G, driven through the stake and the edges of the cap, one at the upper end of the stake and one near the lower end of the cap. The uppermost end of the stake is pointed at H, so as to fit up into the apex of the conical cap, while the lower end, I, of the stake is sharpened, so as to enter the ground freely.
The outside of the cap may be provided with an advertisement, so that it may be used by the dealers in seeds and others as a medium of advertising, adapted by its inexpensive construction for free distribution.
It will be seen that the device may be packed before it is put together into a very small space, the cap being packed flattened out and the stick being packed by itself, in which manner a large number of the devices may be packed into a comparatively small space.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A device for protecting young plants, consisting of a segmental piece of paper or other flexible material folded to form a conical cup, the overlapping edges of which are held together by means of the slotted end of a stake clamping the said edges, said stick being adapted to be pressed into the ground, supporting the cap over the plant, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a device for protecting small plants, the combination of the conical cap consisting of the semicircular piece A of paper or other flexible material, having overlapping straight radial edges and central semicircular notch, B, with the stake F, slotted longitudinally at E,
and having pointed upper end, H, sharpened
