I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. rices, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
PIPE-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
288,035,11ated November 6, 1853.
Application filed April 6, 1883. (No model.)
5 Clamps, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exactdescription.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
a sectional plan view of one of the standards,
and showing the lower part of one of the.
clamping-arms. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower part of one of the clampingarms.
The object of this invention is to provide convenient clam'ps for holding pipes while wiping their joints.
structed with a slotted base, and slotted rightangled standards secured to the base adjustablyby bolts.
ards have jaws upon their upper ends, and ratchet-teeth upon their outer sides, and to them are secured, by screw-bolts, the lower ends of curved arms, having at their upper ends hand-screws carrying swiveled jaws, so that pipes of different sizes ean be firmly held,
as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the base-plate, which is made of convenient length" and breadth, and has three parallel longitudinal slots, B,'formed in it, to receive the bolts 0, that clamp the standards D to the said base-plate. The standards D are-bent at right angles, and their lower parts that rest upon the bed-plate A, have longitudinal slots E formed in them to receive the fastening-. bolts 0, so that by loosening the nuts of the said bolts 0 the standards D can be readily adjusted as may be required. The upper ends of the standards Dhave wide jaws formed upon them, which are recessed. upon the upper side, to form seats for the pipe while being operated upon. The upright arms of which similar letters of reference indicate eortaken through the line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is The invention consists in a pipe-clamp con-.
The slotted right-angled stand- I the standards D have longitudinal .slots G formed in them, and have ratchet-teeth H upon their outer sides, with which engage teeth I, formed upon the inner sides of the lower ends of the arms J. The lower ends of the arms J are secured to the standards D by screw-bolts K, the teeth H I preventing the said arms from slipping while holding the pipe. Fig. 2, to bring their upper ends directly over the upper ends of the standards D. In the The arms J. are curved, as shown inupper ends of the curved arms J are formed screw-holes to receive the hand-screws L, to the lower ends of which are swiveled clamping-jaws M.' The jaws M are recessed upon their lower sides to receive and fit upon the pipe to be held.- The recesses ing-jaws F M are made angular, as shown in Fig. 2, so that they will fit upon and firmly hold different sizes of pipe.
When a joint is to be formed upon a straight pipe, only two of the standards D and their attachments will be required. When a faucet is to be applied to a pipe, or a three-armed joint is to be formed, three of the standards D will be needed, and when a four-armed joint is to be formed all four of the standards D will be used.
of the clamp In using the clamp, the arms J are adjusted as the size of the plpe to be operated upon may require, and the hand-screws Lare turned up. The pipe is then laid upon the clamping-jaws F, and the hand-screws L are turned down, bringing the jaws M down upon the pipe and holding it firmly until the jointhas been formed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A pipe-clamp as herein shown and described, and consisting of the slotted base A, the slotted rightconstructed substantially angled standards D, having jaws F, the curved arms nd the hand-screws. L, and i l jaws M, as set forth.
2. In a pipe-clamp, the combination, with the slotted base A, of the slotted right-angled standards D, having jaws F, and the bolts (1,
substantially as herein shown and described,
. whereby the said standards can he adjusted shown and described, whereby the clamp canv to properly support the pipe, as set forth. be adjusted to hold different sizes of pipe, as 3. In a, pipe-ehnnp, the combination, with set forth. the slotted standards 1), having teeth II, and HENRY M. DIXON.
5 jaws 1*, of the curved a-rmsJ, having teeth I, \Vit-nesses:
the screw-bolts' K, the hand-screws L, and "JAMES T. GRAHAM, the swiveled jaws M, substantially as herein O. SEDGWIGK;
