BERTICE P. HOGAN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN MANUFACTURING & NOVELTY (10., OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A OOR- PORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
LADDER-FOOT CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
T0 00% whmn it may'concern:
Be it known that I, BERTIOE P. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder-Foot Clamps and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to ladder-foot-clamping mechanism, and has for its object the construction and combination, with the foot of a ladder, of removable clamping mechanism whereby the foot of a ladder may be firmly secured to a scaffold or other support.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of the foot of a ladder with my improved clamping mechanism. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation of the same with parts of the clamp mechanism broken away.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the lower end or foot of an ordinary ladder, and B a part of an ordinary scaffold, and D is a clamp, having two upwardly-proj ecting arms d d, ada ted to embrace the sides a a of the feet of a adder A, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. One of the arms (1 is provided with a thumb-screw O, adapted to be screwed against the side a of the ladder so as to firmly secure the clamp D thereto. Between the upwardlyprojecting arms 01 d there is a socket d, adapted to receive the foot of the ladder, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
From the front and rear sides of the socket d arms E E extend downward, so as to embrace the front and rear edges of a scaffoldplank B, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. One of the arms E is provided with a thumbscrew 6, adapted to be firmly screwed against the edge of the plank B, so as to secure the clamp mechanism firmly thereto.
In operation the arms E E of the clamp are clamped to the plank B and the feet of the ladder placed in the sockets d d and the upper end of the ladder placed against the desired sup ort, the clamp-screws O 0 being then fir y screwed against the sides a a of the ladder. It is thereby firmly secured in position for use.
Having described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1s- 1. A ladder-base clamp comprising substantially a pair of upwardly-projecting jaws adapted to embrace the sides of a ladder, means for clamping said jaws thereto, a socket between the bases of said jaws, a pair of jaws projecting downwardly from said socket so as to embrace a plank extending at right angles to the side of the ladder, and means for clamping said jaws to the plank, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a ladder of a clamp having upwardly-projecting jaws embracing the sides of and having a socket between them to receive the ladder-foot, and a pair of downwardly-projecting jaws, on said clamp adapted to embrace and be clamped to a plank at right angles to the jaws clamping the ladder-foot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERTIOE P. HOGAN.
