S-. B. ELLITHORP.
PICTURE HANGER. No. 287,113. Patented Oct. 23, 1883.
I II III/IIIIII llllllll I 1",,
ITN ESSES' UNITE' STATES PATENT O FICE.
SOLOMON B. ELLITHORP, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YoRK.
PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,113, dated October-'23, 1883.
Application filed March 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. B. ELLITHORP, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PictureHangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawtion of the same, which will be hereinaften more fully described. and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a plate, which may be of any suitable ornamental shape, and having two upward-projecting legs, B B, the ends of which have sharp points 0. Between the legs B the plate A is provided with a hook, D, formed by bending the metal from between the legs B into proper shape. At its lower edge the plate A has an inturned flange, F, provided with sharp points G.
In operation the points 0 are driven a short distance into the ceiling, at the angle between the ceiling and wall, after which the points G are pressed into the plastering of the wall just a sufficient distance to get a hold. The picture, mirror, or other article may then be hung upon the hook D. It will be seen that the weight of the picture tends to force the points G deeper into the wall. Thus the heavier the picture the more secure'the support will be.
I am aware that picture-hangers have been constructed with inwardly and upwardly projecting points adapted to enter, respectively, the wall and the ceiling at the angle between the latter and the wall. This, therefore, I do not broadly claim.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The plate A, having at its lower end an inturned flange, F, provided with sharp points G, upwardly-extending legs B, provided with sharp points at their upper ends, and an outturned hook, D, formed by bending the strip from between legs B B into proper shape, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON B. ELLITHORP.
Witnesses:
