Original application February 21, 1950, Serial No. 145,550. Divided and this application June 7, 1957, Serial No. 669,393
3 Claims. (Cl. 15-176) This invention relates to hair brushes, and more particularly to brushes for toilet sets, and still more particularly to brushes in which the brush assembly may be interchangeably separated for cleansing.
It is an object of my invention to provide a brush forming an element of a toilet set, usually composed of a comb, a brush, and a hand mirror, and to provide a frame combined with a brush head assembly which may be removably associated with the frame. More specifically, it is an object of my invention to provide a re movable brush head for a frame which interchangeably permits the frame to have separated a brush head to install a selected brush head or to remove the brush head for cleansing without injuring the brush frame.
More specifically, it is an object of my invention to provide a hand brush usually forming a part of a toilet set in which the frame is made of delicate materials such as cast materials, upon which machining operations cannot be economically performed, and to include for combination therewith a removable brush which is self-soilicient in providing removable attaching means for engagement with the frame, thereby limiting all of the machining operations to the more sturdily constructed brush, to permit simple metal stampings or casting to constitute the frame.
To attain these objects and such further objects as may appear herein or be hereinafter pointed out, i make reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a brush in accordance'with my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the brush head back;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view onthe line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a brush in accordance with another embodiment of my invention;
Figure 6 is a magnified section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a magnified section taken on the line 77 of Figure 5;
Figure 8 is a plan view thinrnetal channel frames;
Figure 9 is a magnified section on the line Figure 8;
Figure 10 is a section on the line 1010 of Figure 9.
Summarizing my invention, I provide a frame of simple contour as made by die-casting or metal stamping, and which includes a rim forming an overhang which is susceptible of die-casting or stamping, and removal from the mold or form, the frame rim serving as the means for .rernovably attaching a brush head which is self-contained with regard to attaching means so that any machining or manufacturing processes are reserved for the brush head which may be removed from the frame quickly for cleansing, without damaging the frame carrying the ornamental finish or assembly of backing elements.
of another embodiment, using a comb, and a brush, inter alia. In accordance with my mvention, the frame contemplated by me includes a frame portion 12 having an overhanging rim 13 and a socket 14 of a contour which is readily susceptible of production by forming in a mold by molding or punching.
die-casting, extrusion, powder Such materials as .cast bronze and zinc alloy, metallic and plastic molding powders are exemplified as susceptible of ready molding to produce a piece which comes out from the mold more or less in finished condition, not only requiring little machining but upon which machine operations are not economically carried out. Frame .made of thin sheet metal or plastic sheet channels, as hereinafter described, may likewise benefit from my invention.
The frame has an open throat portion 15 into which an ornamental back 16 may be pressed frictionally, and where made of non-metallic materials, may be adhesively combined therewith. A frame so provided has a :brush head 17 removably associated therewith, and for this purpose a wooden or plastic plug 18, or brush back, has assembled therewith the bristles 19 in the usual manner.
The periphery of the plug or brush back is formed withan overhanging ledge 20, forming :a shoulder, and side walls 21 to clear the rim 13 on the side edges 22 and bottom edge 23. The head portion 24 is formed with an extension lip 25. The head 24 is arranged to abut the rim 13 at its head portion 26. The base 27 of the brush back is provided with a latch 28and attached to the brush back by extending the branch 29 thereof into engagement with the brush back .and riveting the same by rivets 30 vor other fastening means. The latch has a resilient tongue 31 disposed by the loop 32 into a slot 33 formed in the brush back. A thumb .button '34 may press the pawl 35 on the branch 31 to and from the brush back periphery. The pawl has a camming edge 36 for purposes which will now appear more clearly.
With a construction as described, the brush back may be removably assembled with the frame by first extending the lip 25 beneath the rim 13 at the top portion, to bring the edge 24 into abutting relation at this point. Thereupon the plug is guided to have theside walls pass the rim 13 and seat the ledge 20 on the outer face of the rim. In this position .the cammingedge 36 of the latch rides upon the rim portion 37 and engages on the overhanging Wall 38, holding .the brush against displacement. It will be seen that inward displacement and conforming position are provided by the ledge 20, whereas outward displacement is prevented by the lip 25 and the pawl 35 of the latch engaging the rim as described.
To remove the brush back for cleansing without subjecting the frame to the cleaning operations, only press the thumb against the thumb button 34 to direct the branch 31 inwardly within the slot 33, disengaging the pawl 35 from the rim portion 37. This movement serves to tilt the brush back out from the socket formed Within the frame about the anchored lip 25 as a fulcrum.
While I have shown in the embodiment illustrated "in Figures 1 to 4, removable engagement of the frame and brush back in which the rim serves as a stop for an overhanging ledge, I may provide a frame and brush back assembly in which the brush back conforms to the frame.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 5 to 7, I promold. In this construction an ornamental back 16a may be assembled for frictional or adhesive fit at the periphery, i
as in the prior embodiment.
one need itself readily to proper :draft from a In the construction described I provide a brush head 17a, whose peripheral walls on the side 22a and bottom 23a conform to the rim 13 previously described. The head 25a overlaps an extension lip 26a formed in the frame and having a rectilinear edge conforming to a slot 27a, cut or otherwise formed at the top edge of the brush back; In diametrically opposed position, the back is formed with a latch 28:: having a branch 29a,-as in the prior embodiment, for attachment by rivets or screws 30a.
The branch 31a terminates in a thumb button 34a. At a position spaced from the thumb button 34a, 1 provide a locking lug 35a, shaped to conform to the rim portion 37a.
It will be observed that with this construction, attachment of the brush back 17a is efiected first by directing the lip 26a into the slot 27a and then pressing the bottom edge over the rim 37a. The lip 32a cams the branch 31a over the rim 37a until the locking lug 35a engages the edge, top, and side walls of the rim portion 37a. In this form of construction, the brush head 17a is held against inward as well as outward displacement by the cooperating locking means formed at the top and bottom edges. For removal of the brush back, pressure on the button 34a upwardly, serves to tilt the branch 31a to clear the rim 37a and tilt the brush head out of its socket.
. By making the latch branch 31a resilient, it urges the lip 25a and lug engaging slot 27a into engaging position against accidental displacement.
In Figures 8, 9 and 10 I have illustrated my invention as applicable to a brush frame which is made of thin sheet metal channels or relatively fragile plastic sheeting in the form of channels which, of itself, is economically made thin and would ordinarily not be capable of resisting the stresses involved in manipulating the brush during use. In this construction a frame 40 of thin sheeting material, such as metal of generally U-shaped construction, has branches thereof 41 and 42 joined by a ferrule 43 to house the ornamental back 44 and a stiffening back 45 between the front overhang branch 46 and the rear overhang branch 47 of the channel. The back 45 is dished and has an upstanding rim 48 which extends from the front overhang branch 46 rearwardly to engage the ornamental back 44 and press or wedge the rim of the ornamental back 44 against the rear face overhang branch 47. The back 45 provides a socket 49 for receiving the brush back. It likewise rigidifies and stiflens the frame assembly, holding the frame to the handle 50 by a pull rod 51 whichis riveted to the back 45 and extends through to the ferrule and the branches 41 and 42 into the handle.
Anchor means, which form no part of the invention herein, retain the terminal portion 52 of the pull rod within the handle 50.
The pull rod 51 extends into the handle by passing through a cutout 53, an upper wall of which forms a seat 54 adjacent the front overhang 46. The upper portion of the back 45 is formed with a cutout 55, having a wall transverse of the back to form a seat 56. The extensiveness of the slot 55 is suflicient to receive the lip 25 of the brush head 17, described in the prior'embodiment.
With the construction described, the brush back 17 may be assembled with the frame shown in Figures 8, 9 and 10 by extending the lip 25 into the slot 55, until the shoulder 20 abuts the outer face of the overhang 46. When the ledge 20 is pushed down fully within the socket 48, the rear portion carrying the latch 28 rides into latching position which, in the limiting position, brings the latch tooth 35 into locking engagement with the seat 54 of the slot 53.
By the construction, thin sheet metal channel frames may readily be employed to support a removable brush and provide the rigidity of assembly in forming required of a hair brush. The brush further clamps the frame to the brush back to provide a sturdy construction in a very economical manner.
As in the prior embodiments, the'relatively fragile,
ornamental sheeting material of which the frame is made requires no machining operations in order to afiord adequate support for the removable brush head. The em-,
facturing operations above described, while providing ready means for attachment of the brush back. The resiliency of the latching means carried by the brush head allows for wide tolerances in size between the brush back and frame, without sacrificing rigidity of assembly. 7 Cooperating elements of frame and brush head thereby permit of the formation of highly ornamental frames, withr out sacrificing the requisite strength, yet affording ready removal of the brush head for cleansing purposes.
The present application is a division of my application Serial No. 145,550, filed February 21, 1950, now abandoned.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, What I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
