CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,896, dated Septemberll, 1883.
Application filed June 8,1883. No model.)
1' 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHIAs RALPH, Sr., of Ursa, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in seotion, of my improvement shown as applied to the adjacent ends of two cars. Fig; 2 is a front elevation of the same shown as applied to the end of a car.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the coupling and uncoupling of cars.
The invention relates to a car-coupling con structed with a lever connected at one end with the coupling-pin by a chain, and provided at its other end with a hinged rod extending to the top of the car, so that the coupling-pin can be operated from the top of the car. To the upwardly-proj ecting rod is hinged the end of an arm formed upon a rock-shaft which is provided with a forwardly-projecting arm,s0 that the coupling-pin can be operated from the top of an adjacent car, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Arepresents the draw-head, B the couplingpin, and O the coupling-link, of a car-coup ling.
To the head of the pin B is attached the lower end of a short chain, D, the upper end of which is attached to the outer end of a lever, The lever E is journaled at its middle part to and between brackets F, attached to the end of a car-body, G, and to its inner end is hinged the end of a rod, H, which passes up into such a position that it can be readily reached and operated from the top of the car to raise and lower the pin B.
To the upper part of the rod H is hinged the end of an arm, I, formed upon or-attached to a short shaft, J, which is journaled to the projecting ends of bars K, attached to the top of the car-body G, or to a support attached to the said car-body.
Tothe shaft J is attached, or upon it is formed, an arm, L, which projects into such a position that it can be reached and operated from the top of the adjacent car when the cars are run together. -With this construction the brakeman, while standing in his place upon the top of the car, can raise the coupling-pin B to.couple and uncouple the cars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupling, the combination, with the rod H, connected with the pin B by the lever E and chain D, of the rock-shaftJ and arms I L, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the coupling-pin can be operated from the top of an adjacent car, as set forth. I
MATTHIAS RALPH, SR. WVitnesses:
