UN D STATES PATENT OFFIC WILLIAM G. ANDERSON, onBoSTon, MASSACHUSETTS.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,588, dated September 11, 1883.
Application filed December 28, 1882. {No model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Screens 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which K Figure 1 is a front elevation of the windowscreen frame, part in section, showing the adjustable spring end, arrangement of springs, &c. Fig. 2 is an end view.
My invention has for its object to provide a window-screen with an automatically-adjustable spring end, by means of which the screen can be made to fit windows of various sizes, and which will be very strong and durable.
The combination and arrangement of the various parts I will now proceed to describe.
Referring to the drawings, A is the frame of the window-screen, covered with anysuitable net-work. B is the adjustable spring end. 0 is a rectangular groove on the vertical edge A of the frame, in which rectangular groove the tongue D of the spring end B enters. E E
are metal tubes, having one end closed and secured to the spring end B, the other end projecting beyond the tongue D and entering holes F F in the frame A. G G are coiledsprings placed within the tubes E E, which springs, operating against the ends of the holes FF, force the spring end B outfrom the frame A. H H are screws or pins having the heads h h, which screws or pins pass through the holes I I in the spring end B, and are secured to the bottom of the rectangular Slot 0. 1' z are shoulders in the holes I I, which shoulders engage with the heads of the screws or pins H H and limit the outward movement of the spring end B. K K are grooves which engage with guides on the window-frame.
I am aware that patents have beengranted for window-screens having adjustable spring ends actuated by coiled springs, and I do not claim a broad patent on the same; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the frame A, rectangular groove 0, spring end B, having the tongue D, tubes E, springs G, holes F, and screws or
