2 Claims. (Cl, 223-98) This invention relates to a clothes hanger, and more particularly to a jacket for a clothes hanger.

The object of the invention is to provide a jacket for a clothes hanger which will permit the clothes to be hung more efiiciently and wherein the jacket provides a convenient advertising medium.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger jacket which is an improvement over the hanger jacket shown and described in my prior Patent No. 2,701,084.

A further object of the invention is to provide a clothing hanger jacket which can be used with a hanger such as a wire hanger and whereby a portion of the jacket is rounded so that the clothing can be supported more efficiently, there being a means provided for preventing accidental disengagement of the jacket from the hanger.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger jacket which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank used for making the hanger jacket of the present invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective View illustrating the jacket mounted on a hanger such as a wire hanger.

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but looking at the opposite side of the jacket.

Figure 4 is a plan view of the jacket.

Figure 5 is a view looking in the opposite direction from Figure 4.

Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.

Figure 7 is a fragmentary elevational view illustrating a modification.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a support portion which has a body portion 11 connected thereto by means of a crease or fold line 14, Figure l.

Extending outwardly from the ends of the support portion 10 and formed integral therewith or secured thereto are flaps 12, and the flaps 12 are hingedly connected to the support portion 10 by means of crease or fold lines 15. There is further provided between each flap 12 and the support portion 10 a slot 16 for a purpose to be later described.

Each of the flaps 12 is provided with a slit or cutout 17 which defines in each flap a tongue 18. There is further provided in each flap 12 an aperture 19.

The numeral 20 designates a conventional hanger such as a wire hanger which includes a shank portion 21 that projects through the registering apertures 19. The hanger 20 includes the usual hook 22 and inclined sections 23 which extend through the slot 16. Suitable securing elements such as staples 24 may be provided for preventing the jacket from riding up on the hanger 20. Instead of using the staples 24 a clip such as the clip 25 shown Patented Jan. 28, 1958 ice in Figure 7 can be extended through openings 26 to maintain the jacket in its proper place on the hanger.

From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a hanger jacket which is an improvement over the hanger jacket shown and described in my prior Patent No. 2,701,084. In use, the jacket can be made of a single suitable piece of material such as foldable cardboard or the like. The jacket can be made in any size desired and also any color desired can be used. Furthermore, advertising, slogans, and the like can be arranged on the outside of the jacket so as to help promote business or goodwill. In use the blank can be formed as shown in Figure 1 and then the body portion 11 is folded over against the support portion 10. Then, the flaps 12 are folded against the support portion 10 so that the tongues 18 interengage with each other through the medium of the slit 17. Then, a hanger such as the wire hanger 20 is positioned so that its shank 21 extends through the registering apertures 19. At the same time the inclined sections 23 of the hanger 20 project through the slot 16. The securing elements such as the staples 24 or clips 25 can be used for maintaining the jacket in its proper position on the hanger. When the jackets are not being used, they can be stored or shipped in an extended fiat position as shown in Figure 1 so that they will occupy a minimum amount of space. With the device assembled and positioned on a hanger such as the hanger 20, it Will be seen that the portions 10 and 11 assume a curved shape as shown in Figures 4 and 5 so that a dress or coat will be supported in such a manner that the dress or coat will not be damaged. Thus, the curvature of the portions 10 and 11 will conform to the natural curvature of the coat or jacket so that the jacket of the present invention will increase the efficiency as well as the attractiveness of the hanger. The body portion 11 helps to reinforce the support portion 10. Advertising can be arranged on the outside of the flaps 12 as well as on the various other parts of the jacket. The jacket can be cut from one single piece of suitable material such as cardboard or plastics. The jacket fits various types of hangers, and the jacket serves to hold a dress, coat, or blouse in perfect shape since the back of the jacket is rounded to resemble the natural neck line. The jacket fits any inexpensive hanger so that the inexpensive hanger does the same job as an expensive shaped wooden hanger. Also, the jacket protects palstic hangers from spotting the garments. The jackets may be given to customers as a goodwill gesture. Since the sections 23 of the hanger 20 project through the slot 16, the jacket will be maintained in its proper position on the hanger.

I claim:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a hanger jacket shaped to include a support portion, a body portion extending from said support portion and separated therefrom by a crease line, a pair of flaps extending from opposite ends of said support portion, there being a slot between said flaps and support portion, each of said flaps being provided with a slit defining a tongue in each flap, said flaps adatped to be folded in overlapipng relation with said tongues arranged in engagement with each other, there being registering apertures in said flaps, said body portion adapted to be folded to occupy a position contiguous to said support portion, a clothes hanger having a shank projecting through said apertures, inclined sections extending from said shank and projecting through said slots, said support portion and body portion occupying a curved position when the device is in use.

As a new article of manufacture, a hanger jacket shaped to include a support portion, said jacket being made of a single piece of material and including a body portion extending from said support portion and separated therefrom by a crease line, the free edge of said 3 body portion being shaped arcuately, a pair of flaps of similar construction extending from opposite ends of said support portion, crease lines hingedly connecting said flaps to'said support portion, there being a slot between said flaps and support portions, each of said flaps being provided with a slit defining a tongue in each flap, said flaps adapted to be folded in overlapping relation with said tongues arranged in engagement with each other, there being registering apertures in said flaps, said body portion adapted to be folded to occupy a position contiguous to said support portion, said body portion helping to reinforce the support portion, a clothes hanger having a shank projecting through said apertures, inclined sections extending from said shank and projecting through said slots ,4. whereby the jacket will be maintained in its proper position of the hanger, said support portion and body portion occupying a curved position when the device is in use so that an article of clothing thereon will not be damaged.
