TAPE DISPENSER Filed April 8, 1954 7 INVENTOR.
MIGUEL HENRY SANTOS AT TORNE Y TAPE DISPENSER Miguel Henry antos, Santa Rosa, Califi, assignor to Alice Santos, Santa Rosa, Calif.
Application April 8, 1954, Serial No. 421,570
1 Claim. (Cl. 270-86) This invention relates to a tape dispenser particularly adapted for (i'spensing tape for sealing a crack on the wall.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a tape dispenser which can be easily and efliciently used for dispensing tape directly from a roll upon the crack between Sheetrock in the construction of the wall.
In the usual process when sheets or panels are laid side by side to form. a wall, there are joining edges between adjacent saeets. Sealing tape is used to cover the crack. The placing of such tape by presently known methods and devices is a very awkward operation.
An object of the invention is to provide a box into which a roll of tape for sealing of cracks can be placed rotatably and the end of said tape extended and held in such manner that it can be fastened onto the crack or surface and then the tape unwound as it is placed upon the crack or surface to be sealed.
1 am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the following specification, and as defined in the following claim; hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said device and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for the illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my dispenser.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the dispenser showing the box open.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the dispenser.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental detail view of one side of the dispenser.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a cylindrical box 1, the top of which is covered by a removable lid 2 connected to the box by a hinge 3 on one side and by suitable friction catch members 4 opposite to the hinge 3. A button 6 is provided on the lid 2 for the purpose of facilitating the pulling of the lid 2 open.
From the center of the bottom 7 of the box 2 extends a central arbor 8 which operates as a spool, upon which is placed the central aperture or hole 9 of a roll 11 of the usual sealing tape.
On one side of the box 2 is provided a perpendicular slit 12 through which extends the free end 13 of the roll of tape. It is to be noted that the slit 12 is inclined at an angle so as to facilitate the pulling of the tape therethrough.
States Patnt Patented Jan. 21, 1958 On the outside of the box 2 is provided a shield 14 which has cars 16 thereon for pivoting the shield on a pivot 17 in a bracket 18 mounted on the side of the box 2. A coil spring 1% is suitably arranged on the pivot 17 so as to normally urge the shield onto the side of the box 2 and over the slit 32. A button 21 on the shield 14 facilitates the opening of the shield against the action of the spring H to gain access to this slit 12 for inserting and pulling the free end 13 of the tape from. the roll 11.
Another feature of the invention is the provision, on the side of the box 2, of a generally ml-shaped slot 22 which precedes the shield assembly with respect to the direction of unwinding of the roll and it is spaced sufficiently far from the shield 3.4 to allow the issuance of the tape from the V-shaped slot without interference by the shield structure. The V-shaped slot 22 is also at a slanting angle through the side wall to facilitate the movement of the tape therethrough. The tape inserted into the t -shaped slot 22 is creased into the f-shape as shown at 24 in Fig. 4. in this form the tape can be secured upon cracks or joints at the corners of such sheet structures for sealing the same. The tape in this form can be placed upon the corner and then just by pulling the box down and pressing the tape at the corner, it can be unwound in correct shape at any particular corner.
A small ball 26 is provided in a suitable socket in the apex 23 of the ii-shaped slot in order to facilitate the creasing and moving and dispensing of the same.
In the event it is desirable to use this on an inside corner, the tape may be inserted accordingly reversed so that it may be used on the inside corner when desired.
In operation the Sheetrock or panels are usually mounted first and thereafter the tape is applied from the roll either flat and cut easily against the sharp cutting edge of the shield 14, or is applied in a creased form for corner application by dispensing it through the V-shaped slot. The slots are so related that the respective mechanisms would not interfere with the operation of the tape application.
I claim:
A tape dispensing device of the character described comprising a box adapted to rotatably hold a roll of tape therein, a dispensing slot on one side of said box arranged at an angle to accommodate the free end of said tape from the roll for dispensing the same, an adjustable cutting shield on the outside of said box engaging said tape at said slot, and resiliently yieldable means to hold said shield against said tape, and a gen erally V-shaped slot through the side of the box for creasing the end of the tape roll as it is dispensed therethrough into a shape adapted to be applied to corners, said V-shaped slot being so spaced from the first slot circumferentially away from the dispensing end of said tape at a distance to permit the dispensing of the end of the tape from either of said slots without interference by the other slot.
