2 Claims. (Cl. 2164) This invention relates to a device for applying wall paper to the side walls and ceilings of rooms. More particularly, the invention has reference to a device of the character referred to which Will simplify measurably the task of applying wall paper to the wall surfaces of a room, thus to permit the paper to be applied by a relatively unskilled person.
An important object of the present invention is to provide an improved device of the character referred to which will be so designed as to insure that the wall paper will be laid straight, the device serving, in this connection, as a gauge means when the paper is being applied to the wall surface of ceiling.
Another object of importance is to provide a device as referred to above which will be so designed as to permit the roll of wall paper housed therein to be of any desired diameter, thus to permit the paper to be precut to the exact length desired.
Another object of importance is to provide a device as stated above wherein means will be incorporated in the holder for the wall paper roll, which means will guide the paper as it is fed from said holder.
Yet another object is to provide, in a wall paper applicator, a combined guide and pressure bar on the roll holder, which guide and pressure bar will be effective for exerting a uniform pressure against the applied paper, throughout the width of the roll, to insure that the paper will be laid smoothly over the wall surface.
Yet another object is to provide a wall paper applicator which will be simply designed, with no moving parts, and which will be particularly rugged and trouble free in operation.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claims appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a wall paper applicator formed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view, the device being shown as it appears when in use; and
Figure 4 is a rear perspective view.
The reference numeral 10 has been applied generally in the drawing to designate the roll holder, this being a main component of the device. Rigid with the roll holder is an extension frame Work, projecting rearwardly from the roll holder to provide a means to which is secured a handle assembly designated generally at 14.
Considering first the construction of the roll holder, this is formed as an elongated, open frame work. The roll holder would be so proportioned as to length, in this regard, as to accommodate any of various conventional roll widths.
The roll holder 10 is provided, at opposite ends there of, with rectangular end frames 16, and rigidly connected at its opposite ends to said end frames, at the front of the roll holder, is a combined guide and pressure bar 18. The pressure bar 18, as shown in Figure 3, is extendatent T 2,711,263 Patented June 21, 1955 ed along the top surface of the roll holder, at the front of the roll holder, thus to be properly located for guiding the strip of paper as it is unwound from the roll R contained within the holder, the bar 18 being also properly disposed for exerting pressure against the wall surface W, after the paper has been applied to said wall surface, with said pressure being applied uniformly throughout the width of the strip of paper.
Rigidly connected at their opposite ends to the respective frames 16, to provide a bottom for the roll holder, are parallel bottom frame members 20. These extend the full length of the roll holder, and are relatively narrow, the members being so spaced as to support a roll R therebetween, the members thus serving to properly center the roll within the holder, during the rotation of the roll.
As shown in Figure 3, the end frames are provided, in the upper portions thereof, with openings 22, said openings being disposed at the back of the roll holder. Extending between the top portions of the end frames, adjacent the openings 22, is a guide member 24. As the strip of paper is fed from the rotating roll R, said strip will contact the guide member 24, and will thus be properly guided during the application of the same to the wall surface W.
Extended in parallelism with the guide member 24, and also secured fixedly at its opposite ends to the end frames 16, is an angle iron member 26, the member 26 constituting a longitudinal frame member on the roll holder. Guide member 24 and frame member 26 cooperate to define therebetween an elongated, longitudinal slot extending the full length of the roll holder and opening at its opposite ends through the openings 22 of the end frames 1t. The strip of paper fed from the roll R passes through said slot, and is guided over the guide member 24, said strip then passing over the combined guide and pressure bar 18.
For the purpose of reinforcing the roll holder at the opposite ends thereof, cross bars 23 are utilized, these being weldedor otherwise fixedly secured at their ends to the front and back portions of the end frames 16. The bars 28 also serve to hold the roll R against endwise' movement out of the associated roll holder 10.
Considering now the construction of the extension frame work 12, this includes rearwardly projecting, relatively short frame bars 3t Frame bars 30, at one end, are fixedly secured to the opposite ends of the frame member 26. Y The frame bars 30 project rearwardly from theroll holder a relatively short distance, and at those ends remote from the roll holder are connected by a longitudinal frame bar 32. Bar 32 is fixedly secured, as by welding, to the associated frame bars St The extension frame work, thus, is a plane framing means that is fixedly secured to the roll holder, at the back of the roll holder, said framing means extending horizontally from the rear surface of the roll holder.
Attached at its upper end to the mid-length portion of the bar 32 is a ferrule 34. Ferrule 34 is of tapered formation, the ferrule tapering in the direction of its fixed connection to the bar 32. The ferrule 34 can itself serve as a handle, where the device is being used on the side wall of a room. If, however, the device is to be used for applying Wall paper to a ceiling, an extension handle member 36 can be inserted in the ferrule, the member 36 being of substantial length, thus to permit one to stand upon the floor of a room while applying wall paper to the ceiling thereof. a
In use of the device, a strip of wall paper is cut to the particular length desired. For example, if the strip is to be applied to the ceiling, it would ordinarily be cut to a length slightly greater than the distance which it =3 is to extend across the ceiling. This allows a slight overlap at the opposite ends of the paper.
The strip of paper to be applied to a side wall is similarly cut, in advance, to a selected length.
Regardless of the surface to which the paper is to be applied, the paper is then rolled to form'a roll R, and said roll is inserted through the open back of the roll holder it The free end of the roll is then passed through the longitudinal guide slot defined between members 24, 26, and is applied to the wall surface Win the manner shown in Figure 3. The wall surface, of course, would be previously prepared for application of the wall paper thereto.
it will be understood that the tool shown does not include a paste container, since in use of the tool, the wall surface is pro-conditioned by application of paste thereto.
During use of the device, the guide and pressure bar 18 is adapted to properly dispose the strip of paper relative to the wall surface, during the movement of the device along the wall surface. The bar 18 is also used, in this connection, for the purpose of applying pressure to the wall.
It is also considered to be an important characteristic of the invention that the rectangular cross section of the roll holder causes the roll holder to have a vertical front surface that is useful in applying the paper to vertical wall surfaces, such as the side walls of a room, the roll holder at the same time having a horizontal top surface which is useful when the device is being shifted horizontally below a ceiling during the application of wall paper to said ceiling.
A further important characteristic of the invention is believed to reside in the arrangement whereby the paper will necessarily be laid straight upon the wall surface. In other words, if the device is properly aligned relative to the beginning edge of the surface to be covered, such as a baseboard, the paper will necessarily be laid straight thereafter, since it will be fed uniformly out of the roll holder during rotation of the roll within the roll holder.
It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it be ing considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A device for applying wallpaper comprising a holder which the wallpaper may be fed, a guide and pressure 5 bar extending between and secured to the front of said end frames adjacent the tops of the latter frames for guiding and applying the paper received from the guide slot to a wall surface, a horizontally disposed extension frame extending between and secured to the rear of said end frames adjacent the tops of the latter frames, and
a handle dependingly carried by said extension frame.
2. A device for applying wallpaper comprising a holder adapted to rotatably house a roll of wallpaper, said holder including a pair of upstanding rectangular end frames arranged in side by side spaced relation, spaced bottom frame members extending between and connecting the bottoms of said end frames together, each of said end frames being provided in the top with an opening adjacent the rear thereof, said openings being in registry with each other and together forming a guide slot through which the wallpaper may be fed, a guide and pressure bar extending between and secured to the front of said end frames adjacent the tops of the latter frames for guiding and applying the paper received from the guide slot to a wall surface, and a handle extending from said holder.
