To all whom it may concern,.-
Bit known that'I, MARTIN V. B. EvEssoN, of ,-pboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oscillating Chairs, of which the following is tion.
This invention has relation to an oscillating chair for domestic and other purposes; and it consists'of a supporting-frame which carries on U-shaped oscillating hangers longitudinal base-strips to which the legs of the chair are applied, the seat of which is arranged at a higher level than the supportingframe, and actuated by a hinged treadle supported on a forward-extending portion-of the front hanger.
The oscillating hangers are supported on antifriction bearings of the mainframe and retained therein by recessed side plates.

A in the drawings represents a main frame of suitable strength, which is laterally braced in suitable manner and placed on casters or rollers, as desired.-
On the top rails of the main frame A are supported U-shaped hangers B, which are arranged parallel to each other, or preferably somewhat converging to each other, and which extend transversely from one side to the other of the supporting-frame A. The chair C is applied to longitudinal base-strips C', attached to the lower part of the hangers B. The seat of the chair C is arranged above the top rails of the supporting-frame A, so that the latter does not interfere with the oscillating motion of the seat. The U -shaped hangers B are supported by anti-friction bearings D of the frame AA, which bearings consist of an angular plate that rests in the top rails, and is screwed fast to the same and provided with a vertical semicircular extension, which is recessed for the a specifica-V shafts of the anti-friction rollers and the outwardly-bent end of hangers B, as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5. The supporting base-strips C of the chair C are extended in forward direction and provided at their front end with a transverse foot-rest, E, which may be rigidly connectedthereto, or hinged, so as to be thrown out of the way. shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. While the foot-rest E simply serves for supporting the feet, the treadle E, which is applied to the front hanger, serves for imparting oscillating motion to the chair when pressed upon by the foot. Oscillating motion is thus imparted with but little exertion, owing to the converging position of the hangers B, the lever action of 7o the treadle, and the small resistance of the anti-friction bearings of the hangers. Consequently an easy and pleasant rocking motion is obtained that is instantly interrupted by removing the foot from the treadle.
The oscillating chair is specially adapted for a nursery or ladys sewing-chair, as, owing to the fact that the seat'of the chair is above the top rails of the main frame, the lateral motion of the arms in working is not interfered with.
The chair has the advantage that oscillation can be kept up without placing the feet on the floor. lt can be finished in any suitable manner, so as to be used for parlors, sitting-rooms, and other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the supporting main frame A, U-shaped supportingehangers B, extending transversely between the frame, longitudinal base-strips C, chair C, supported thereon, and a forward-extending treadle, E', applied to the front hanger for imparting an oscillating motion to the chair, said treadle being pivoted to b, and having its bearing on the projections b, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the supporting main frame A, U -shaped hangers B, extending transversely between the frame, chair C, supported on longitudinal base-strips G, foot-rest E at IOO plied to the front hanger and pivoted to b', and having its bearings on the projections b, s ubstantially as set forth.
