United States Patent C) TRASH BURNER William Frank Parrish, Indianapolis, Ind., assignor to Superior Sheet Metal Works Co., Inc., Indianapolis, Ind., a corporation Application March 22, 1954, Serial No. 417,883
1 Claim. (Cl. 110-18) This invention relates generally to a combustion device and more particularly to trash burners.
The conventional trash burner consists of a re box usually provided with holes in the walls thereof to create a draft, legs extending downwardly therefrom to permit ashes to fall, and some sort of a cover adapted to permit escape of combustion gases. As a result, ashes falling freely without any collection device being provided create a re hazard, and holes in the walls of the re box also permit live sparks to escape and in addition have thin edges which are easily subject to the effects of corrosion. As a result, the conventional trash burner is a tire hazard and is short lived due to the effects of corrosion, especially resulting from high temperatures.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a trash burner which is inherently resistant to corrosion and which includes an ash receiving device.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a cylindrical tire box, a grate supported therein, an ash collector below the grate, and means for supporting the lire box from the ash collector and spacing the re box with respect thereto to provide a draft opening from the exterior of the lire box upwardly through the grate.
'Ihe full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation view of the trash burner provided in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is provided in accordance with this invention a trash burner consisting of a cylindrical box 10. At the bottom periphery of the re box there is provided a number of U-shaped spacing and locating members 11. The members 11 consist of a U-shaped stop portion extending inwardly of the periph` 2,814,263 Patented Nov. 26, 1957 ery of the tire box, a bolt receiving ear 12 through which bolts 14 may project for attaching the members 11 to the fire box. The lower side of the U-shaped portion of members 11 is in the form of a spring clip 15 adapted to have pressure engagement with the upper periphery of an ash collector 16.
U-shaped portions of members 11 space the re box from the ash collector 16, whereby there is a draft opening 18 around the entire periphery of the re box for admitting flow of air upwardly within the fire box 10. On the inner ends of the bolts 14 there may be mounted a grate member 17.
At the upper end of fire box 10 there is provided a conical cover 20 in the apex portion of which is mounted a screen 21 for serving as a flue through which combustion gases may escape. The screen Z1 serves to prevent burning embers from escaping out of the re box.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the trash burner provided in accordance with this invention is so constructed that flying embers can not escape either from the bottom portion thereof or through the cover. Any ashes which may fall through the grate 17 are naturally collected in the box or ash collector 16, thus contributing to elimination of a lire hazard and also to cleanliness. In addition, adequate ow of draft is possible without the provision of any holes in the walls of the fire box, thus providing the additional advantage over conventional trash burners that flying embers can not escape from any draft openings.
The invention claimed is:
Combustion apparatus comprising a fire box, a grate supported at the bottom thereof, an ash collector below said grate, spacing and locating members depending from the lower edge of said iire box, each of said members having a U-shaped portion extending inwardly of and between the re box and the ash collector to provide a draft opening below said grate, said members also including an extension of said U-shaped portion extending downwardly into gripping engagement with the rim of said ash collector, and a cover on said re box having an opening for passing combustion gases.
