VENETIAN BLIND TAPE v 7 Filed Dec. 22 1955 mvsmon 6057A v M444 7525 United States Patent VENETIAN BLIND TAPE Gustav Walters, Middletown, C0nn., assignor to The Russell Manufacturing Company, Mlddletown, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Application December 22, 1955, Serial No. 554,798
4 Claims. (Cl. 139-420) This invention relates to Venetian blind tapes and has for an object to provide a tape having novel and improved characteristics.
Venetian blind tapes must be dimensionally stable when exposed to heat and moisture, particularly in climates where windows are constantly open and where the bottoms of the blinds are held down by clips to prevent rattling and blowing. Under such conditions any shrinkage or stretch which would raise or lower the bottom of the blind would be objectionable. The tapes should also be resistant to mildew and the ultraviolet rays in sunlight, and should be made of a material which is resistant to soiling and which can be readily cleaned. In addition the tapes should fold or pleat uniformly when the blinds are raised.
An object of the invention is to provide a Venetian blind tape having these and other desirable characteristics.
In accordance with this invention the tape is woven with specially prepared warp yarns as hereinafter set forth. Conventional filament nylon may be used for the filler.
More specifically the warp is composed of at least two ends of continuous filament cellulose acetate yarn, stretched and steamed, and 'saponified in caustic to form a highly oriented regenerated cellulose yarn having the characteristics above mentioned. Such a yarn is sold under the name Fortisan by Celanese Corporation of America. Two or more ends of Forti'san are assembled in parallel or two ends of Fortisan may be assembled with an end of continuous filament high tenacity rayon therebetween. For most blinds yarns of -90 denier to 100 denier are satisfactory.
The three or more parallel ends are introduced into a bath of Plastisol, a liquid vinyl plastic composition, and are then exposed to infra-red heat and dried to form a vinyl bonded and coated flat ribbon.
This flat ribbon of two or more parallel ends is woven as warp using as a filler a continuous filament nylon to form a fiat woven tape which may be fabricated into Venetian blind tape.
The finished tape is dimensionally stable and has the desirable characteristics above mentioned by reason of the nature of the Fortisan and of the vinyl coating. It folds or pleats uniformly due to the flat form of the warps.
A specific embodiment is shown in the drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a detail view of a the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of a portion of a fabric using the yarn of Fig. 1 as warp yarns; and
Fig. 3 is a broken elevation of a Venetian blind tape made therefrom.
-In Fig. 1 a pair of ends 10 of continuous filament 'Fortisan are disposed in parallel with an end 11 of continuous filament high tenacity rayon disposed therebetween and bound by a coating 12 of Plastisol to make a fiat composite yarn 14.
Fig. 2 shows a fabric woven with warps composed of the yarns 14 and with filler yarns 15 of continuous filament nylon. The fabric is so woven that the flat composite warps 14 lie fiat and parallel in the fabric.
Fig. 3 shows a Venetian blind tape of the usual construction made from the fabric of Fig. 2. The tape is formed with front and back panels 20 with bridging strips 21 spaced to support the blind slats (not shown).
Due to the flat form of the warps the tape tends to fold 0r pleat in a direction normal to the plane of the fabric and to form uniform folds when the blind is raised.
What is claimed is:
flat warp yarn embodying 1. A Venetian blind tape comprising woven Warp and filler yarns, said warp yarns each comprising a plurality of parallel ends of a dimensionally stable, continuous filament triacetate bonded by a Vinyl coating into a flat yarn, said warp yarns lying flat and parallel in said tape.
2. A Venetian blind'tape comprising woven warp and filler yarns, said warp yarns each comprising a plurality of parallel ends of a dimensionally stable, continuous filament triacetate bonded by a vinyl coating into a flat yarn, said warp yarns lying fiat and parallel in said tape, and said filler yarns comprising continuous filament nylon.
3. A Venetian blind tape comprising woven warp and filler yarns, said warp yarns each comprising a pair of parallel ends of a dimensionally stable, continuous filament triacetate with an end of continuous filament, high tenacity rayon disposed therebetween, said parallel ends bonded by a vinyl coating composition into a flat yarn, said flat warp yarns lying flat and parallel in said tape.
4. A Venetian blind tape comprising woven warp and filler yarns, said warp yarns each comprising a pair of parallel ends of a dimensionally stable, continuous filament triacetate with an end of continuous filament, high tenacity rayon disposed therebetween, said parallel ends being bonded by a vinyl coating composition into a flat yarn, said flat warp yarns lying flat and parallel in said tape, and said filler yarns being composed of continuous filament nylon.
