Other objects of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.
ln the drawings forming part of this specification:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a side for railway freight cars embodying the instant invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 2. Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally a side embodying the instant invention and adapted to be applied preferably as a unit to the existing side sill 11 of a railway freight car. The side 10 embodies a side plate 12 which as is customary extends substantially from end to end of the car. The side lil embodies a plurality of door posts and intermediate posts. One of these door posts is indicated at 13 and one of the intermediate posts is shown at 14. The construction and arrangement of the door posts and intermediate posts is well known and the disposition of the door posts in order to define a door opening i5 is also well known to those skilled in the art.
The upper ends of the door posts and intermediate posts are secured to the side plate either by welding or by rivet'- ing. At their lower ends the door posts and the intermediate posts are. directly connected to the existing side sill 11 of the car by means of simplified and identical brackets 16. Each of these brackets is formed of a pair of plate members 17 and 18 which are turned outwardly to provide flanges 19 and 20 by means of which the brackets are secured to the side sill 11 preferably by rivets 21 and 22. At its outer end each of the plates 17 and 1S is formed to provide upstanding flanges 23 and 24 secured as by means of rivets 25 and 26 on opposite sides of the inwardly extending flange 27 of the Z-shaped door post 13 and inwardly extending web 28 of the Z-shaped intcrmediate posts 14.
Additional securement is obtained between the door posts 13 and the extension member 32 by means of a gusset 42. The gusset 42 is angular in cross section and embodies a flange 43 secured asI by meansv of rivets 44 and 45 to the upstanding fla-nge 36 of the extensionmember 32 and a flange 46 which is similarlyinclined and secured to the web 35 as by means of Yrivets 4'?. The gusset 42 also embodies an inwardly extending flange riti which isy securedy to the flange. 27 of the door post as by means of rivets 49. As is shown. more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings the flange 48 of the gusset 42 is inclined downwardly and rearwardly as indicated at 56' so as to be spaced from the flangey 27 of ther door posts and the upstanding flange 24 of the brackets 16 secured to the door posts. By reason; of the described form of the gusset 42 the brackets which Vsecurethe door-posts to the side sill can be made identical: with the brackets which secure the intermediate posts to the side sill.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the upwardly and outwardly inclined web 35 of the extension member 32 is disposed below the top of the side sill 11. It will also be apparent that the brackets 16 which directly connect the posts to the side sill 11 are positioned entirely above the extension member 32 so as to be concealed by the extension member. Moreover, the inclination of the web 35 permits the extension member to serve as a tension member in addition to its function as a closure member so that it will carry a portion of the tension stresses imposed upon the posts. Also the welding of the inclined web of the extension member to the brackets serves to obtain a unity of action of these parts.
The plate 53 is similar in its structure to plate 52 and is accordingly provided with inner and outer flanges 62 and 63 which are secured respectively to the side sill 11 and to the upstanding flange 36 of the extension member 32 as by means of rivets 64 and 65. The upper and lower edges of the bracket plate 53 are shaped similarly to the upper and lower edges of the bracket plate 52. The plate 53 is so arranged relative to the plate 52 that the web 66 of plate 53 prefereably abuts the web 58 of plate 52.
The brackets 51 serve not only to reinforce the upstanding flange 36 in the door opening but also act as supports for a threshold plate 67 lying in the door opening. The threshold plate embodies a horizontal flange 68 which extends across and is welded to the upstanding flange 36 and which along its outer edge is formed with a depending ange 68a disposed in outwardly spaced relationship to the ange 36 and terminating above the door track 69. The plate 67 extends inwardly of the upstanding ange 36 and at its inner edge is formed with a depending flange 70 which is spaced inwardly of the ange 36 and which terminates in a horizontal flange 71 resting upon and welded to the upper edge of the brackets 51 as indicated 'at 72. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the horizontal ange 71 serves as a support for the outer edge of floor boards 73 while the inner depending flange 70 serves as an abutment for the floor boards. Beyond the door posts a combined grain board and floor board support 74 is employed. Each of these boards is grained `as indicated at 75 so as to provide a shoulder 76 upon which the outer edge of the floor boards 73 are supported and an abutment 77 for the outer edge of the floor boards. The abutment 77 of the combined grain board land oor board support members and the inner 'clepending ange 70 of the threshold plate are alined longitudinally of the car so that all of the oor boards used whether in the door opening or beyond the door opening are of the same length.
The track 69 is formed of an angle member which is arranged with one ange 78 in horizontal position and the other flange 79 in vertical position and depending from the flange 78. A plurality of track brackets 80 are secured to the underside of the horizontal ange 78 as by means of rivets 81. To support the track as illustrated a plurality of track bracket supports such as 82 are ernployed. Each of these brackets is formed` of a bent plate which provides a downwardly and inwardly inclined flange 83 secured to the underside of the web 35 of extension member 32 as by means of rivets 84. The track bracket support S2 also provides a vertical depending flange 85 to which the track brackets 80 are secured as by means of rivets 86. The flanges 83 and 85 are reinforced by means of a plate member 87 which is welded to these flanges.
It will be apparent that numerous changes and modilications in the details of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such changes and modications be comprehended within this invention which is to be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
