The invention relates to vehicle wall construction having girder sides including vertical and longitudinal framing members on the inner faces thereof and auxiliary members mounted upon the outer faces of the girder walls for detachably securing separate exterior sheathing assemblies xedly to said girders.
The principal object of the invention is to provide outer sheathing for girder type cars with means fixedly securing the sheathing to the girder without penetrating the girder wall by the fastening devices, such means functioning also to de'tachably support the sheathing members.
An important object is to provide sheathing supporting members disposed vertically at spaced intervals along the outer face of a girder wall and interconnected in functional relationship by stiifening members welded to the inner face of the girder wall and extending longitudinally thereof elfectively to supplement each other to rigidify the girder Wall.
A further object is to provide an outer sheathing assembly adapted for application to girder side walls of new or existing equipment of welded or riveted construction for the purpose of enhancing the appearance of thecar exterior.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a railway vehicle embodying the side wall sheathing arrangement of the invention and showing the disposition of the sheathing members above and below the windows for the full length of the vehicle;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view of the vehicle showing the location of the sheathing supporting verticals welded to the outer face of the girder wall and disposition thereof with respect to location of the windows and longitudinal and vertical framing members secured to the inner face of the girder side;
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view taken on line 3 3, of Fig. 2, thru vehicle side above the Windows, showing the girder wall with sheathing supporting verticals secured to the outer face thereof and the sheathing assembly secured thereto, and also the location of the longitudinal stiffening member welded to the inner face of the girder intermediate the side plate and window header longitudinals;

In said drawings, the invention is indicated by the application of the sheathing to a railway car I0 as shown in all the figures. The sheathing II, in Fig. 1, extends preferably the full length of the car, above and below the windows I2, continuously or in sections, as may be found most expedient. The depending apron portion I3 at the car side, between the trucks I4, may likewise be tted with sheathing members adapted for application to the apron framing I5,'as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The side framing members, including girder sheet I6, may be of high strength steel and the sheathing Il preferably of stainless steel; the framing side posts I'I extend upwardly in pairs between the windows I2 from the longitudinal side sills I8 to the side plate longitudinals I9, as best shown in Fig. 2. The trim mouldings 'I at longitudinals 22 above the windows and mouldings 8 at the belt rail 24 below the windows are of like configuration and formed with one edge angle shaped to provide base flange 61 adapted for lap-over connection with corresponding flange 51 on associate section, and a side wall portion 68 extending outwardly at an acute angle to the base iiange and serving to complement a like wall portion 58 on adjacent section to form groove 59 adapted to receive insert moulding 60 to complete the finish for the sheathing at these positions. These mouldings 1 and 8 are formed along their opposite edges withrebent portions providing a bearing ridge 10 for engaging the girder sheet and Ymarginal hook flanges 1I for resiliently engaging complemental flanges 12 on retaining strips 13 having attaching flanges 14 for securing them to the girder sheet, preferably by welding vas at 15, the mouldings lbeing so proportioned as to insure interlocking engagement between moulding ang'e "II and retainer flange 12 and positive bearing of moulding ridge 10 upon the girder wall I5 when secured to sheathing supporting vertical'members by the fastening devices 31 thru lap-over base flange 61, as best shown in Figs.y 4 thru 7.
The sheathing assembly is completed by the application of trim moulding member 9 at the side sill position as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The member is corrugated with valley portion 50 bearing against adjacent supporting vertical member 33 and with its upper edge formed to provide base ange 11 adapted for lap-over connection with corresponding ange 51 on adjacent overlying section, and a side wall portion 18 extending outwardly in acute angle relationship with the base ange and functioning to complement a cornpanion wall portion 5,8Y on the associate member II to form groove 59 adapted to receive insert moulding 60 to complete the finish for the assembly at this position. At its lower margin, the section is formed with a rearwardly projecting ange portion 16 extending beyond the plane of girder I6 for attachment to side sill I 8 which may be by the same fastening devices 19 used to secure apron supporting hinge brackets 80 to the sill, as shown in Fig. 6.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, suitable provision is made for the application of a name plate 2 to the sheathing above the windows. The plate may be attached to the wall in any approved fashion, preferably by securing devices extending thru insert mouldings 55 and 60 and a xed part on the girder sheet to prevent separation of the plate from the sheathing.
In practice, it is contemplated that sections Il of the sheathing between respective trim moulding sections 6 and 1 above the windows, and 8 and 9 below the windows, will :tirst be joined together by welding in overlapping relation the base anges 51 of adjacent sections, then applying the connected sections to the girder as a unit thru medium of the vertical supporting members to which the sheathing is detachably secured by fastening devices 31 at said overlapping flanges. With the sheathing above the windows thus positioned, trim moulding sections 6 and 1 are then interlocked with fixed components on the car, at
6 points beyond the ends of the vertical members, with their respective base flanges 64 and 61 overlapping corresponding flanges 51 on adjacent sections II with which and the verticals they are connected by fastening devices 31. In similar fashion, with the sheathing below the windows in position, trim mouldings 8 and 9 are secured to the car with their respective base anges 61 and 11 overlapping corresponding flanges 51 on adjacent sections Il to which and adjacent vertical members they are connected by fastening Ydevices 31, and when the insert mouldings 55 and 60 are entered in grooves 5| and 59, respectively, the lnish for the installation is complete.
It is conceivable that changes in the width of intermediate sections I I may be made to conform to variations in height of car side above and below the windows or between the trim mouldings above and below the windows, so that a greater or lesser number of sections would be required to cover the wall area, and they may be made with or without the intermediate groove 5I having single web attaching base 52, depending upon the Width of the particular section.
When fixed to the car side as shown, the sheathing assembly supporting members function to supplement associated stiffening and framing members to rigidify the girder wall. As will be understood from the construction hereinbefore outlined, the sheathing may be applied from the outside without disturbing the interior iinish and permits of the ready removal and replacement of damaged sections. The sheathing thus applied is corrosion resistant, easy to clean, and protects the girder Wall from exposure to the elements, and maintainable in proper operating condition at a minimum of labor and expense.
What is claimed is:
1. In vehicle side Wall construction including an imperforate girder sheet, vertical and horizontal framing members welded to the inner face of said girder sheet, window openings in said girder sheet between certain of said framing members, vertical rigidifying members welded to the outer face of said girder sheet in areas between said vertical framing members and of a length to overlap said horizontal framing members, said rigidifying members being disposed in substantial alignment above and below the window openings, and sheathing elements detachably secured to the rigidifying members by means spaced from said girder sheet and leaving the girder sheet imperforate.
2. In vehicle side wall construction including a substantially continuous girder sheet, vertical and horizontal framing members welded to the inner face of said girder sheet, window open-l ings in said girder sheet between certain of said framing members, vertical rigidifying members welded tothe outer face of said girder sheet in areas between said vertical framing members and of a length to overlap said horizontal framing members, said rigidifying members being dis.- posed in spaced relation above and below the window openings, and horizontally disposed substantially continuous sheathing elements, above and below the Window openings detachably secured to the rigidifying members by means spaced from said girder sheet and leaving the girder sheet imperforate.
3.
