MACHINE FOR CUTTING FILES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,591, dated March 2O, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEoDoRE BURR, of the town of Hastings, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cutting Files; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing` is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of t-he same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication.

I construct a metallic bed-piece or frame work marked A upon the drawings, with ways for a slide or table marked B having fasteners marked C by which the blank file is firmly secured to the table, and also with ways for a pedestal marked D, upon which I adjust the hammer and chisel cutters, and also the spring to bear upon the hammer, the pedestal being so constructed as to receive a set screw marked E attached to the bed, by which means the force of the hammer is varied so as to cut the required depth in the file, by changing it more or less in mesh with the tappets on the cylinder marked F, the cylinder being so constructed, as to contain various sets of tappets changing in number with a spring catch in the end of the cylinder, can be moved or secured to any row of tappets desired, which being brought in contact with the hammer governs the gage or cut in the lile, which is moved steadily by means of a rack on the underside of the table meshing in a pinion upon a shaft, upon which is fixed a spur wheel drawn by means of a screw marked G moved by face gearing from the driving shaft, until the cog or spur on the table comes in contact with a lever pinion which raises the screw out of mesh and permits the table to be drawn back by means of a weight or spring.

I do not claim a hammer operated upon by a spring neither do I claim a slide moved by an endless screw.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is LThe use of the cylinder F constructed as described in connection with spring hammers, cutters, and file blank carriers, the whole operating in the manner, and for the purpose described.
