Description

OFFICE.
ELEAZAR COFFIN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IVIORTISING-IVIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,141, dated July 1'?, 1860.
To all 'whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEAZAR CorrIN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction and Arrangement of Machinery for inortising; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters marked thereon.
Figure l, is a perspective and Fig. 2 a sectional view, showing the construction and general arrangement of the machine.
A, is a chisel holder which is operated by the foot lever D, the pitman C, and the lever B. The holders, or adjustable stops E, E, are designed to hold the lumber while being mortised, from rising when the chisel R, is withdrawn from the mortise or cut made by the same.
F, I", and Gr, are guides, or rests, designed to hold the piece to be mortised in therequired line.
H, is a clearing tool which is operated by the tool holder or sliding bar I, adjustable crank K and gearing L, M. The lever N, is attached tothe guide rest O, which is hinged at P, and is operated for the purpose of carrying t-he tool H, to the bottom of the cut made by the end cutting chisel R, thereby clearing the chip from the same. The guide table or rest O, is lifted or held up by the springs Q, Q. `When the lever N, is released the cutter and clearing tool H is lifted throwing out the chip which rests upon the top of the end project-ing bits of the tool H.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The piece to be cut or Inortised is placed upon the bed T, against the guides or rests E, F, or G, and the chisel It, being brought down by the foot lever D produces the end cuts of the mortise which is then brought under the clearing tool H, which is then brought down into the saine by the lever N, (as has been shown) when the crank K, being operated produces the side cut of the mortise while the end projecting bits running under the chip throws it out as the lever N, is released and the table or rest O, raises the tool holder I, thereby leaving the mortise clean. It will be seen that by extending or contracting the adjustable crank K, the stroke or out of the tool H, is adapted to the size of the mortising or end cutting chisel while the widt-h is regulated to suit the same by the distance that the side cutters are set apart which of course must correspond with the end cutting chisel R. The cutter rest or table O, is adjusted by the set screw U, which throws the same over to the point or line where the cut or mortise is to be made. The pitman of the cutter holder sliding upon the wrist of the crank K, allows it to be kept in a true line by the table or rest O.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cutter and clearer H, cutter holder I, adjustable hinged table, O, crank K, and screw U, when connected and operated in connection with the end cutting chisel R, holder A, lever B, pitman C, lever D, and the rests F, F, and Gr, or their equivalents as set forth.
