Description
8 mm Ml M T. P. XA 0 .P 0 D WA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND L. \VOOD, OF EASTLAND, TEXAS.
COMBINED BLACKING-BRUSH AND BLACKlNG-BOX HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,107, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed August 31, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND L. Woon, of Eastland,in the countyofEastland and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Combined Blacking-Brush and Blacking-Box Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the application of blacking to the dauber of a blacking-brush, and to prevent displacement of the box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved blacking-brush and blacking-box holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same, parts being shown in section.
The blacking-box A is loosely held in aframe, B, made of wire, wood, or other suitable material, by means ofa screw, 0, passing through a knob or button, D, above the frame B into the bottom of the blacking-box; or the blacking-box can be secured to the knob or button in any other suitable manner. The frame B, which in the case shown is made ofmetal strips, will be held loosely between the blacking-box A and the button D, so that the box A can be turned on its center bytnrning the knob D. At that part of the frame B toward the handle end of the brush a loop frame, E, is attached, through which a bail, F, passes, which is pivoted at its free end to short standards F on the back of the brush; or the ends of the bail are pivoted in the side edges of the back of the brush, or are pivoted in any other suitable manner. The loop-frame E is provided at its outer end and in its upper surface with a transverse groove, a, adapted to receive the edge of a curved spring-catch, G, secured on the lower end of the handle. The frame Bis provided on its front end with a square frame, H, with which a vertical spring-catch, J, engages, which is secured on the back of the brush, and has its upper end slightly bent, as shown.
The operation is as follows: When the brush is not in use, the blacking-box'A rests on the back of the brush, with the open face downward, and is held in place by the spring-catch G, restinginlthe groove not the loop-frame E,
and by the spring catch J, which presses against the outer end piece of the frame H. If blacking is to be applied to the dauber K, the same is moistened, the loop-frame E is released from the catch G by pressing on the spring-wing G of the said catch, and then the box A, the frame B, and the knob or button D are swung upward in the direction of the arrow a until the open side of the box A rests upon the dauber K. Then the knob or button D is turned forward and back, whereby the box A will also be turned, and the blacking will be applied on the bristles of the dauber without soiling the hands or clothes of the operator, and in a very simple manner. The blacking-box cannot be misplaced, as it is always held to the brush. After use the box A is pushed back in the inverse direction of the arrow 0., and will automatically be held in place by the spring-catches G and J. Blacking-boxes of different sizes can be held in the frame B and to the knob'D.
I do not limit myself to the means shown for holding the box in place on the brush, but may use any suitable devices.
If desired, the blacking can be moistened in place of moistening the dauber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a blacking-brush, of a swinging frame held on the back of the brush, and of devices for holding a black'ingbox loosely, so as to be adapted to be rotated in the said swinging frame, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a blacking-brush, of the swinging frame B, the blacking-box A, and the button or knob D, connected with the box A,'substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with a blacking-brush, of the swinging frame B, the blacking-box A,
the button or knob D, and the screw (J, sub-- stantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with a blacking-brush, of the frame B, adapted to hold a blackingbox, of the bail F, having the ends of its shanks pivoted on the brush, substantially as ICO . of the swinging frame B, adapted to hold a herein shown and described, and for the purof the swinging frame B, adapted to hold a [0 pose set forth. blaeking-box, the loop-frame E, the bail F, the 5. The combination, with a blanking-brush, frame H, and the spring-catches G and J, sub stantially as herein shown and described, and blanking-box, the loop-frame E, the bail F, and for the purpose set forth.
the spring-catch Gr, substantially as herein EDMUND LORENZO WOOD. shown and described, and for the purpose set Witnesses: forth. E. R. THOMAS,
6. The combination, with a blacking-brush, H. S. SCHMIOK.
