UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
CEVEDBA B. SHELDON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,909, dated December 23, 1873; application filed August 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OEVEDRA B. SHELnoN, ofthe city, county, and State of NewYork, have inventeda new and Improved Knife-Gleaner and Polisher and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a front elevation; Fig-2, a side elevation, partly in section, and showing the cleaner and polisher attached to a table. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cork-holder.
This invention relates to devices whereby knives and forks may be cleaned, freed from stains, and polished; and consists in the means substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out inthe claim.
-A represents a pan, in which is placed the polishing or cleaning` powder. This pan is made fast to a projection, b, between the polisher-frame B and the clamp C. In the latter works a thumb-screw, c. The frame B is slotted at b1 b1, and has a socket, b2, at top, through which works the guide-rod D. The socket and guide-rod may be made angular or round, but preferably the latter. E is the holder of the upper cork, rubber, or other substance employed to receive the polishing-powder, and may have the dan ges c, the guides c1 that slide up and down in slots b1, and the teats c2. By this construct-ion the cork is securely held and retained in the holder.
guide-rod D are connected by an intermediate and horizontally-slotted piece of metal, F. In
The holder E and the slot works the side pin g on the end of a lever, G, pivoted at g to the frame B. Between the piece F and the guidesocket b"l is an expansive spiral spring, H, that is stiff and exercises considerable tension, holding the upper cord, K, firmly down upon the lower one, K', which is made fast to its seat E. These corks have bevels or inclines outward from the center on their opposite faces, to enable the knife to be a'ected with equalpressure on all parts of its two sides. l
The application is as follows: The polishingpowder having been placed in the pan A, and the cleaner having been attached bythe clamp G c to a table or other convenient place, some powder is secured on the end ofthe knife, the holder E and its cork K lifted by means of the lever, and the knife withv the powder inserted between the corks. The corks are now allowed to come together, and the knife now drawn back and orth a few times between them, when it is not only cleaned, however foul it may have been, but is beautifully polished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- A spring-pressed holder, E, provided with the horizontally-slotted piece F on the top thereof, combined with a lever, G, ,fulcrurned on frame, and.having the side pivot gworking in said slot, as and for the purpose set forth.
CEVEDRA B. SHELDON.
