Application June 9, 1953, Serial No. 360,436
1 Claim. (Cl. 33-180) This invention relates to a framing square attachment and has for its primary object to render a framing square useful in squaring a coupling flange relative to a pipe length for attaching said flange to said pipe length.
Another object is to enable the device to be readily detached from the framing square in order that the latter may be used in a conventional manner.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a plate engaging one leg of the framing square and extending outwardly therefrom in parallel relation to the other leg of the framing square, a yoke carried by the plate and extending outwardly therefrom adjacent and in contact with one side face of the leg of the framing square engaged by the plate, and a clamp screw carried by the yoke and impinging on the edge of the leg of the framing square remote from that engaged by the plate.
Other features include lugs carried by the plate and extending outwardly therefrom in spaced parallel relation to the yoke, and the plate having a V-shaped notch extending therethrough and opening through the edge thereof remote from that engaged by the leg of the fram ing square for defining longitudinally spaced feet which lie parallel to the leg of the framing square engaged by the plate.
In the drawings,
Figure l is a side view showing this improved attachmerit connected to a framing square and resting on a pipe to which a coupling flange is being attached,
Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the drawings in detail a pipe length P is shown to which a coupling flange F, the exposed face of which must lie perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pipe, must be connected.
In order to convert a conventional framing square designated generally into an implement useful in squaring the flange F with the axis of the pipe length P, I attach to the leg 12 of the framing square 10 my attachment designated generally 14 while the leg 16 of the framing square is placed against the outer face of the flange F.
The attachment 14 comprises a plate 18 having formed therein a V-shaped notch 20 which opens through one edge thereof to define feet 22 which are adapted to engage the work, or pipe P.
Fixedly connected to the plate 18 and extending outwardly therefrom adjacent the edge thereof remote from the feet 22 is a yoke 24 which is substantially triangular in form and is provided adjacent its apex with a return bend 26 which is adapted to overlie the upper edge of the leg 12 of the framing square 10 and carries a nut 28 through which is threaded a thumb screw 30, the lower end of which impinges on the edge of the leg 12 of the framing square remote from that engaged by the plate 18. It will thus be seen that the plate may be detachably clamped to the leg 12 of the framing square so as to hold the feet 22 in spaced relation to the leg and enable the leg 12 of the framing square to escape the flange F against the outer face of which the leg 16 of the framing square is placed. Lugs 32 are carried by the plate 18 and extend outwardly therefrom in spaced parallel relation to the yoke 24 to form with said yoke a channel for the reception of the leg 12 of the framing square iii, the bottom wall of which channel comprises the upper edge of the plate 18. The purpose of the lugs is to form a side wall at one side of the edge of plate 18 that is in engagement with leg 12, with the yoke forming an opposite side wall engaging against opposite faces of the leg 12 as shown in Figure 4 when the leg is disposed in contact with the adjacent edge of plate 18.
In the preferred form of the invention, the upper edge of the plate 18 is recessed as at 34 to define adjacent opposite upper corners of the two plate pads 36 which are engaged by the leg 12 of the framing square 10.
In use the implement is coupled to a leg 12 of the framing square 10, while the opposite leg 16 is placed against the flange F and with the feet 22 contacting the pipe length P, it will be evident that the outer surface of the coupling flange F will lie perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pipe P and being held in this position, the flange F may be welded to the pipe P as by a weld W.
Obviously the implement may be removed from the framing square for transportation or storage and may be carried in a tool box ready for instant use when occasion requires.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A quickly removable pipe squaring attachment for a framing square having angularly related, coplanar legs, comprising: a plate having a planiform shape for disposition thereof in the common plane of the legs, the plate having opposite edge portions at least two of which are parallel for extension thereof in longitudinally contacting relation to a work piece and to one edge of the one of the legs, respectively, whereby to dispose the work piece in parallel, transversely spaced relation to said one leg; a yoke rigidly connected to one face of the plate laterally of the plane of the plate, and including a return bend portion defining a channel extending in the plane of the plate and spaced from the plate to receive the opposite edge of said one leg; a clamping screw threadedly engaged in the return bend portion for movement within the channel into said plane of the plate, for engaging the other edge of said one leg; and lug means connected to the opposite face of the plate in position to define with the plate and yoke a second channel, the second channel extending in the plane of the plate and facing toward first channel for receiving one edge of said one leg.
