Description

H. E. STILLIANS. COMBINATION FILING BLOCK AND SAWINO BOARD. APPLICATION FILED MAR.25. 191s.
Patented Jan. 9, 1917.
ATTOR NEY HARRY E. STILLIANS, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
COMBINATION FILING-BLOCK AND SAWING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1916. Serial No. 86,737.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY E. STILLIANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Filing-Blocks and Sawing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a work holding device and more particularly to a jewelers combination wood filing block and sawing board.
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel supporting means for receiving a sawing board as well as a wood filing block, novel fastening means being associated with the wood filing block for removably and adjustably holding the sawing board in various adjusted positions in the support.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a novel clamping means associated with the supporting means for removably holding the supporting means on a suitable support, such as the edge of a work-bench.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one'that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of my invention, the dotted lines illustrating the sawing board in an extended position 'as well as illustrating the position and arrangement of the fastening means for adjustably holding the supporting board in position. Fig. 2 is a front end elevational view of my invention illustrating to advantage the arrangement of the sawing board in the supporting means as well as the relation of the wood filing block to the sawing board. Fig. 3 is a lonforming a part of gitudinal sectional. view of the wood filing block illustrating to advantage the construction and arrangement of the fastening means. Fig. 45- is a fragmentary top plan view of the sawing board.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like corresponding parts throughout the various views,I provide an elongated rectangular supporting plate 1 with a longitudinal sawing board receiving recess 2, the plate being further provided adjacent its forward end with standards 3 integral with the outer sides of the plate, shoulders 41: being provided at the junctures of the standards with the sides of the plate to serve a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Slidably disposed in the recess 2 and of a configuration somewhat similar to the configuration of the recess is my improved sawing board 5, said board being provided at its outer edge with a V-shaped notch 6 to Patented Jan. 9, 1917.
facilitate the sawing of a piece of metal without scarring the board or interfering with the sawing operation.
In order to adjustably and removably maintain the sawing board 5 in position in the recess I have provided my improved wood filing block 7 which is preferably of a rectangular configuration having the forward end cut diagonally, as illustrated by the numeral 8. This block is placed between the sides of the standards and rests upon the shoulders 4, the bottom of the block being arranged in close relation with the upper surface of the sawing board, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 2, while the forward diagonal cut end of the block projects a slight distance beyond the forward edge of the plate. When in this position by the use of suitable fastening devices, preferably screws 9, which pass through the standards and engage the block, the latter is maintained-in substantial rigid yet removable relation with the standard. Preparatory to securing the block in position a bolt including a head 10 and a shank 11 is associated with a transverse opening 12 in the block. The head 10 is countersunk in a recess 13 which communicates with the opening while a nut 14: is engaged'upon the free threaded end of the shank and countersunk in a recess 15 communicating with the opposite end of the opening and arranged in the bottom of the block. In use, it will be apparent that after the block has been secured in. position by engaging the slotted head 10 with a suitable tool, (not shown) and rotating he shank the free end of the shank will be forced into binding engagement with upper surface of the sawing board and will thereby maintain the sawing board in an adjustable and substantially rigid yet removable position with respect to the'plate. For the purpose of removably maintaining the plate in position preferably on the edge of a work-bench I have formed integral with the forward edge of the bottom of the plate, an angularly bent arm 16 the free end of which adjustably receives the clamping screw 17 This clamping screw includes a thumb piece 18 and an engaging disk or head 19 which when the thumb piece is operated is forced into engagement with the under edge of the top of a workbench, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The operation of my invention is as follows: As was set forth this arrangement is particularly adapted for use by jewelers when sawing, filing or otherwise working on a piece of jewelry. Should it be desired to saw a piece out of a ring or the like, and assuming that the sawing board is within the recess 2, by releasing the free end of the shank 11 of the bolt and by pressing the rear end of the board forwardly, the front end in which the notch is provided can be arranged in its desired position. Now by tightening the bolt so that the free end of the shank will engage the upper surface of the board, the latter will be maintained in a substantially rigid yet removable position with respect to the plate. The wood filing block 7 serves particularly as a means for receiving a piece of jewelry when the jeweler desires to file a piece of jewelry. It will of course be understood that the clamping screw allows the device to be clamped to various supports.
Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention I desire it to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact details shown; however, I desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement of the supporting plate for receivingthe sawing board and the wood filing block as well as the fastening means associated with the block for adjustably maintaining the sawing board in various positions on the plate.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost. 7
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
I claim: 7
