1 Claim. (Cl. 312-28) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in articles of furniture and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a combination sewing cabinet, work table and storage space device whereby cloth may be laid, patterns placed, cloth cut and all necessary markings made in a convenient manner.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a combination sewing cabinet, work table and storage space device, including a carriage slidably mounted in a compartment and carrying a panel on which a sewing machine is mounted together with novel means for retaining the panel raised to the level of the table top and exposed from the compartment.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination sewing cabinet, work table and storage space device having a forward and rear set of drawers. The forward sets of drawers are for storage of the various articles employed in cutting, stitching, pressing and finishing handwork. The rear sets of drawers provide storage space for individual student lockers or other storage space as needed.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a combination sewing cabinet, work table and storage space device of the aforementioned character that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, saving of time and motion in operation, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the present invention showing the sewing machine supporting panel raised and exposed and also illustrating the drop leaves in their raised position;

Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 33 of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 2, and with parts of one of the housing members broken away to show the manner in which the sewing machine supporting panel is housed within the member; and

Figure 5 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 3.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents a combined sewing cabinet, work table and storage space generally, including a pair of hollow, substantially rectangular housing members or supports 12 and 14 whose upper ends are suitably secured, by fasteners or the like, to a horizontal upper wall 16. The members 12 and 14 are spaced apart sufficiently to define a knee space 18 2,746,825 Patented May 22, 1956 for users of the combined sewing cabinet, work table and storage space.

The members 12 and 14 are provided with supporting kick- boards 20 and 22 and a vertical partition 24 is mounted in each of the members 12 and 14 and the top half of the center portion to divide the members into forward and rear compartments.

Horizontal guides 26 are mounted in the rear compartments and slidably receive drawers 28. The rear walls of the members 12 and 14 are provided with openings to accommodate the drawers 28. The rear walls of the members 12 and 14 and the top half of the center portion are provided with openings to accommodate the drawers 28. Suitable hand grips 30 are applied to the drawers whereby the same may be moved into or out of the rear compartments. An elongated relatively shallow recess 32 is provided in the upper face of the wall 16 and has mounted therein, by any suitable means, a soft wall or cork sheet 34.

A horizontal opening 36 is formed in the undersurface of the wall 16 to define a storage space for a tray or board 38 which is suitably padded by material 40 to form an ironing board. A retaining wall 42, secured to the undersurface of the wall 16 below and across the opening 36, slidably supports the board 38.

The forward wall of the member 12 is formed with various sizes of rectangular openings that slidably receive an upper drawer 46 and space for an intermediate drawer 28a, which when not in use is stored in rear of cabinet, and a lower drawer 50. Guides, similar to guides 26 are mounted in the forward compartment of the member 12 and slidably support the drawers 46, 28a and 50. Dust panels 46a should separate all drawer spaces. Space 44 is asbestos lined to hold the pressing iron when not in use and is closed with a door 44a hinged at left hand side.

A closure or door 52 is hinged to the forward open end of the member 14 for the horizontal swinging movement and includes a locking mechanism or catch 54 for engaging a keeper 56 mounted in the forward compartment of the member 14.

A pair of horizontal guide channels 58, mounted in the forward compartment of member 14, slidably receive the rollers 60 of a pair of carriage forming members 62 to which there is hinged, as at 64, a vertically swingable panel 66. A conventional sewing machine M is suitably supported on the panel 66.

Spring mechanism 68 connect the panel 66 to the members 62 and are manually actuated to retain the panel 66 horizontal and extended from the member 14.

A plate 70 is secured to the undersurface of the panel 66 and includes a depending flange 72 and a depending lug or rib 74 that is spaced laterally from the flange 72. This particular construction permits the upper edge of the closure 52 to be forced over the lug 74 and retained between the lug 74 and flange 72 to form a connecting means between the panel and the closure, whereby the closure forms an additional or auxiliary support for the panel 66.

Drop leaves or extensions 76 and 78 are hinged to the outer side walls of the members 12 and 14 for vertical swinging movement. The outer faces of the extensions 76 and 78 are formed with recesses in which cork sheets or pliable materials 80 and 82 are mounted.

A pair of swingable folding brace arms 84 are pivoted to the underside of each of the extensions 76 and 78. The lower ends of the arms 84 are provided with cross portions 86 whose reduced ends 88 are rotatably received in openings 90 in brackets 92 secured to the outer side walls of the members 12 and 14.

A horizontal groove96 is provided in the undersurface of the wall 16 between the members 12 and 14, adjacent the rear edge of the wall 16 and receives the upper edge of the partition member 98 whose side edges are prefer- 3 ably secured, by cement or the like, in vertical grooves provided in the inner side walls of the members 12 and 14.

In practical use of the present invention, when the sewing machine M is housed within the member 14 and with the drop leaves raised, cloth may be laid, patterns placed, garment or other article cut, and all necessary markings made by placing the cloth upon the extensions 76 and 78 and across the wall 16.

When the panel 66 is retained in its horizontal position, the tray with accessories from the upper right hand drawer on the left side of the cabinet is placed to the right of the machine head and an iron from the upper left hand opening on the left side of the cabinet is removed, plugged into the electric outlet provided on the right hand side of the cabinet so that the pressing operation can be accomplished. The iron (steam and dry) may rest at any convenient place on Wall 16 when machine and work table are in use.

During the period of use by any one individual, the particular drawer occupying the space at 48 is the one which holds the personal belongings of that individual student or other user. When not in use by that individual, the drawer is stored in identical sized space provided as shown in Figure 2 of rear elevation. If used in a clothing laboratory, one drawer is assigned to each student who uses the combined sewing cabinet, work table and storage space for a given semester or quarter. Each drawer shown in Figure 2 should therefore be provided with locks. Drawers at rear of desk must fit into space now labeled 48. When all drawers are in place at the rear of the desk, 48 is only an empty space.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

A combined sewing cabinet, individual Work table and storage space device comprising a pair of hollow housing members, an upper horizontal wall supported upon the members and spacing the members, one of said members having a front wall with an opening therein and a closure for the opening, a horizontal guide track mounted in the said one of said members, a carriage slidably supported by the guide tracks, a vertically swingable sewing machine supporting panel pivoted to the carriage and movable into and out of the said one of the said members through said opening, and interconnecting means between the closure and the panel for retaining the panel in a horizontal position, level with the table top, when the panel is moved out of said one of said members and when the closure is in its open position perpendicular to said front wall, said interconnecting means including a plate secured to the under surface of the panel and having a depending flange and a lug spaced from the flange, said closure including an upper edge received between the flange and the lug when the closure is open and the panel is raised.
