The present invention relates to typewriter desks, and more particularly to a new and improved typewriter desk which is adapted to be assembled with one or more interchangeable components indifferent ways to form different articles of office furniture, as desired.
In my copending application Seria1'No.'696;2I2, "filed September 11, 1946, for Oflice Furniture there is disclosed novel sectional ofli'ce furniture comprising a plurality of interch'angeable components that are adapted to "be assembled "in different ways to form a wide variety of different articles of office furniture, as desired. "This application is addressed specifically to anoveltype- 'writ'er'desk construction which may form a cornponent of sectional office furniture of this type. The principal object of the invention, accordingly, is to provide a new and improved typewriter desk construction which can be assembled with one or more interchangeable components to form an article of ofiice furniture.
The "aforementioned copending application discloses office furniture which comprises a main unitformed in the shape of a substantially flat table member having supports forming a kneehole space and at least one other space adapted to receive a furniture component. Preferably the supports are vertical and are located between The central space between the vertical supports forms a kneehole and the outer spaces to the right and 'left, respectively, of the vertical supports are adapted to receive, selectively, a plurality of interchangeable "furniture components by .means of which the assembly maybe converted to any one of a number of d'i'fierent articles =of furniture.
The specific furniture component to which the present application is addressed comprises a typewriter desk having-aspace forming a kneehole and including storage space for stationery, etc, if desired. The typewriter desk component is adapted to fit any one of the outer component receiving spaces under the table member, and can be pulled out in a manner similar to a drawer when needed.
Additional objects and advantages will be apparent fromthe following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
.Fig. .1 is a view in perspective .of a typewriter desk component constructed according to the invention and which is shown in partially assembled relation to a main unit;
Fig. 2 is a side view in perspective of the desk outer, narrow edges of the table portion '10.
2 -shown in Fig. '1 with the typewriter desk component in the closed position;
,.Fig. 3 is a side view in perspective "of the'typewriter desk component shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a top view in section, taken along line 5- 1 of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. '5 is a side view in section taken along line 5-5 of Fig. '3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 6 is a partial view in section, showing a locking device for "the desk illustrated in Figs. 3-5,, inclusive.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the main unit of an article of furniture constructed according to the invention disclosed in my aforementioned copending application is shown as comprising a substantially flat, double top, rectangular table member Ill having secured thereto a pair of vertical supports H and i2 located between the The central space between the vertical supports H and I2 forms a kneeho'le to receive the knees of the-user and the outer spaces to the right and left, respectively, of the vertical supports H and I2 are adapted to receive any one of a plurality of different furniture components, as desired, to form any one of a number of different articles of furniture. Central pigeon'hcles T3 are preferably prov ded on opposite sides in the table member it] of the main unit and a pair of similar drawers I So for pencils and the like may be located near one narrow edge of the table member I'O, 'on opposite sides thereof, as shown.
One furniture component may comprise, for example, a box-like member 1'4, conforming in shape to one of the outer spaces beneath the table member l0 and having'one or more drawers [5 slidably mounted therein. Preferably, the boxlike member i l ."is 'mounted on rollers 16 to facilitate "its movement from place to place, although these are not necessary. The desk drawer component i4 may include a single deep drawer or a plurality of shallow drawers. Further, the desk drawer component l4 may 'be retained in the assembled position by a hinged member 15a which is adapted to drag on the floor or floor covering when one of the drawers I5 is pulled out and which can be elevated when it is desired to move the member .I 4.
Positioned in the space to the right of the verticalsupport L2 in Fig. '1 is a typewriter desk component 21 constructed according to thepresent invention. The typewriter desk component 21 is of such size that it can be readily received in the space to the right of the vertical support l2, and it may be formed with a kneehole 28 (Fig. 3) and a plurality of horizontal or vertical pigeonholes 29 for stationery, envelopes and other necessary equipment.
The typewriter desk component 2'! is provided with a typewriter table 30 carrying a typewriter 32 and secured to a liftable cover 3| at right angles to the table 30, as shown in Fig. 3. In the open position the cover 3| serves as a support for the work. As shown in greater detail in Figs. 4 and 5, the typewriter table 30 may be mounted on pivots 30a located on opposite sides of the desk component 2! and which are jour- 13181611 in the sockets 30b on the typewriter table 0. nected to a fiat member 35a which is pivotally mounted on the desk at 31b, longitudinal slot means 31d being provided to afford a slidable pivotal connection between the member 3Ia and the desk. The typewriter 32 may be counterweighted by a weight 3lc secured to the flat member 3Ia.
The typewriter table 30 may be locked in the open position by a pin 33 (Fig. 6) which is urged by a compression spring 34 into a hole 35 in the side of the typewriter table 30. The spring 34 is seated in a recess 36 in a supporting member 40 secured to the desk in any suitable manner and engages a member 3? which carries the pin 33 and which is secured to a slide panel 38. By moving the slide panel 38 to the left, the pin 33 may be withdrawn from the hole 3'5 permitting the table 39 and the cover 3i to be moved to the closed position. 7
The typewriter desk component is of such size and shape that when in the position of nonuse, shown in Fig. 2, the entire assembly conforms to the shape of a conventional type desk.
When it is desired to use the typewriter, the typewriter desk component 2'! is pulled outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, until the desk cover 3| can be raised to permit use of the typewriter. Rollers It may be provided, as shown, to facilitate movement of the desk component 21.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that the invention provides a new and improved typewriter desk construction which is of great utility, particularly in business organizations having requirements for frequent changes in plant layout and plant equipment. By providing a typewriter desk component which may be assembled in either of several positions with respect to a main unit, an extremely flexible article of oflice furniture results.
It will be understood that the specific embodiment described above by way of illustration may be modified in a number of respects within the scope of the invention. The invention is not intended to be limited to the specific embodiment described and illustrated herein and the latter is susceptible of numerous changes in form and detail within the scope of the appended claims.
