UNITED STATES SAMUEL L. NELSON, OF
PATENT EEICE.
SALTILLO, MISSISSIPPI.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,360, dated. March 20, 1883,
Application iled November 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all. 'whom it may concern Beit known that l, SAMUEL L. NELSON, of Saltillo, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Gliurns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use/it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in rotary churns; and'it consists in the combination of a suitable casting, which is secured upon the top of the churn-cover, and which is provided with an extension, a support provided with small projections, the 'clampingpiece provided with notches, a screw, and the churn-flashers, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a suitable casting in which the dasher-shafts are journaled, and from which the dashers can be readily and quickly detached by the removal of a single piecewhen it is necessary to clean them.
Figure l is a side elevation of a churn-moveinentembodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through the casting above the top of the cover.
The churn-body may be of any desired shape, size, or construction that may be preferred, and its cover D will be preferably made in two parts for the purpose ot' giving easier access into the interior of the body, and to allow the dashers to be removed whenever so desired.
Upon the top of the cover is secured the casting B, which has the extension C upon its top, in which is journaled the shaft for the handle and operating wheel or segment E. I do not limit myself to either an operating wheel or segment, `tor either one may be used.
lf the segment is used, a handle will have to he worked back and forth, and thus canse the dashers to constantly reverse but where a wheel is used the dashers will be made to rotate continuously in opposite directions. Formed as a part of the casting Bis the horizontal support F, which extends from one side A of the casting to the other, and which has the two small projections, G, near its ends. The
upper ends, I, of thedashers project up through the cover D, past the extension, and through the top part of the casting, as shown. In order to secure these dashers in position upon the casting, the clamping-piece J, having a notch in each end, is applied against the side of the casting and over the sides of the upper ends of the dashers, and this clamping-piece J is then secured to the casting by means of a screw or other clamping device, O. To each one of the upper ends ofthe dashers is secured a small spur wheel, L, which mesh together and cause the dashers to revolve in opposite directions. l
Upon the top ofthe wheel, which comes just under the extension C upon the top of the cast ing, is formed an additional beveled wheel, N, with which the operating-wheel engages.
In order to prevent any vertical play of the dashers, two collars or anges, P, are formed upon the upper end of each one of the dashers., and these flanges or collars catch against the upper and lower sides ot' the cover, and thus prevent the dashers from having any other than a rotary motion. The two dashers R may be shaped as here shown, or in any other way that may be preferred, and both of them are pivoted upon the short connecting-rod S.
By usinga short connecting-rod, as here sh0wn,the need ofa frame is entirely dispensed with and the cost ofthe churn very materially l'essened.
Having thus described my invention, l claim-- In a churn,'the combination of the casting B, having the extension C upon its top, and the support F, provided with the small projections G, with the clamping-piece J, provided with notches, screw 0, and the churn-dashers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl aliiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL L, nELsoN.
