Description

R. EQVAN COURT. GHURN Patented, June 12 UNITED ROBERT E. VAN COURT, OF ELKTON, VIRGINIA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,194, dated June 12, 1894.
' Application filed April 13, 1894. Serial No. 507,434- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. VAN COURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkton, in the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to those churns which employ rotary dashers provided with curved blades, and my object is to construct a churn which will be cheap, strong and durable and at the same time be more efficient in thoroughly and quickly agitating the cream.
A further object of my invention is to provide more convenient means for removing the dasher for repairs and cleaning, and for raising and lowering the tank to suit persons 0 different heights.
To these ends my invention consists in the peculiarities more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, represents a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the tank, and Fig. 3, a transverse section also through the tank.
The tank is represented by the reference letter a and is mounted upon the legs 6, provided with extensible sections 1) adapted to slide within cleats b fastened to the legs, and which are capable of being secured at any desired point by means of set screws 72 A cover 0, having the usual hole 0, together with a window 0 and packing cleats c fits in rabbet grooves 0 and prevents the escape of the contents of the tank during agitation While at the same time permitting their access and examination by the operator.
Circular disks d are obliquely disposed upon a horizontal shaft 6. This obliquity of the disks is for the purpose of making them act upon the cream somewhat like a screw excepting that they have the effect of projecting the cream laterally and in opposite dir'ections at points above and below the shaft as they revolve. Acting in unison with these disks arecurved or segmental dashers f, diametrically located upon opposite sides of the disks, so that when the latter are rotated in the direction denoted by arrows, they will have a centrifugal action to throw the cream away from the shaft and in a direction different from that of the disks. To still further create cycles and eddying currents during the revolution of the disks and their dashers, there is located opposite each disk sub-' end of the shaft is supported by a conical bearing 76 which enters a corresponding socket is in the shaft. Said bearing is located within a tubular chamber Z, and can be withdrawn from the socket by means 'of an axially extending handle m. A coil spring n. keeps the bearing in its socket while the shaft is in operative adjustment.
The driving mechanism consists of the usual crank 0, gear 0, and pinion j, located upon the exterior of the tank.
It will be seen that when the shaft carrying the disks is rotated in the direction denoted by the arrows, violent agitation of the contents of the tank will take place, the disks projecting the cream laterally, while the dashers exert centrifugal force to send it in a different direction, when it is still further whirled by the crescent-shaped brackets g and g, located on the sides of the tank.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a churn of the rotary dasher type, the combination of a tank containing a horizontal shaft provided with oblique disks carrying segmental dashers on diametrically opposite sides thereof, and substantially crescent-shaped brackets located on the side of the tank, opposite each disk, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. VAN COURT.
Witnesses:
H. L. MILLER, 0. E. HAMMEN.
