Be it known that I, ALBERT A. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in East Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the `following' is a full7 clear, and exact description.
rIhis invention relates to locks, and more particularly to locks of the mortise type 1n which a latch bolt is adapted to be retracted by key mechanism at the outside of the door, and by knobs at the inside and outside of the door respectively, there being suitable stop work associated with the outside knob for clogging it when it is desired to confine the retraction of the bolt from the outside to the key mechanism.
The invention also has special reference to a lock in which the stop mechanism comprises clogging and releasing slides respectively operating in openings of the 4face plate.
The invention is of utility, however, in connection with locks of different types.
One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the stop work, so that when it is in the clogging position it cannot be cast off from the face of the lock by a sneak thief when the door is open, or by a burglar when the door is closed.
Another object of the invention is to pro- .vide a lock having means for preventing the throwing oit of the stop work except when one of the latch retracting levers is operated, said means being so constructed that it is applicable to a lock having a very narrow backset.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock embodying my improvements, with the cap plate removed, the latch bolt being in the normal protracted position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the latch bolt retracted, and the stop work released for manual operation from the face of the lock; and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3- 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, I have shown my improvements applied to a mortise lock having a very narrow backset. The case 3 of usual pattern contains a latch bolt 4, having a stem 5 guided between lugs G, 7 on the back of the case. A spring 8 embracing the latch bolt stem between the head and the lugs G, 7
normally holds the bolt in protracted posi- 50 case on a post 11, and adapted to be actu- 55 ated by an inside hub 12 or an outside hub 13. These hubs are associated with the usual two-part knob spindle, which I have not considered it necessary to illustrate.
rI;`he hubs 12, 13 are adapted to act on the 70 lever 10, through a shorter lever lil, located underneath the lever 10, and pivoted on the same post 11, said lever 14C having a flange' 15 adapted to make Contact with lever 10 when either hub` is turned in a clockwise direction with respect to Fig. 1, whereby the lever 10 is actuated to retract the latch bolt, as shown in Fig. 2. The lever 10 may be actuated from the outside of the door by suitable key mechanism which may comprise a cylinder lock 1G, having a rollback or cam arm 17 to engage the upper eX- tremity 18 of the latch retracting lever 10, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The stop work mechanism associated with the outside hub 13 comprises a clogging slide 19, adapted to engage a notch 2O in the hub 13, and a releasing slide 21 connected with the clogging slide by a walking` beam member 22, pivoted in the case at 23, and piv- 9o oted to the releasing slide 21 at 24. rIhe lower end of the walking beam is provided with a notch 25 itting over a pin 2G on the clogging slide 19. A lever 27, pivoted in the case at 28, and acted on by a spring 29,
is pressed upward by its spring into such a position that a projection 30 on the upper edge portion of the lever 27 extends into the notch 25 of the walking beam when the stop work is in the position shown in Fig. 1. In
this manner, the lever 27 dogs the lower end of the walking beam member and prevents movement to the left with reference to Fig. 1, such as is necessary to release the clogging slide from the outside hub when the releasing slide is pushed inward. It will be understood, therefore, that under normal conditions the lever 27 dogs the stop work when the latter is in the operative position.
When it is desired to release the outside 11:",
hub, the lever 10 is actuated by turning the inside knob, which causes the inside hub 12 to actuate the lever' 10 through the'lever 14, as shown Vin Fig. 2. As the lever 10 is actuated, a nose portion 31 on said lever projecting downward beyond the pivotal portion of the lever engages the extremity 32 of the lever 27 and turns said lever 27 on the pivot 28 into a position in which the projection 30 on the dogging lever will release the walking beam, as shown in Fig. 2. The stop work can then be cast oit in the usual manner by pressing inward the releasing slide 21. The walking beam is then moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the dogging slide being carried out of engagement with the outside hub. On releasing the inside knob, the dogging lever will move back to its initial position, the projection 30 thereof being then located slightly to the rear of the lower portion of the walking beam member. The stop work may be moved into the clogging position without the necessity of actuating the lever 10, because as the clogging slide is pushed inward the lower end of the walking beam member pushes the projection 30 of the dogging lever out of the way. Then, when the clogging slide has reached the dogging position, the projection 30 snaps up into the notch in the lower end of the walking beam and again dogs the stop work.
rlhe lock is readily reversible because the latch bolt may be reversed, the cylinder 16 may be inserted in an opening at either side of the case, and the hubs 12, 13 may be interchanged. The inner end of the clogging .Slide 19 is wider than the hub 13 and will engage the notch in said hub when the lock is reversed, as well as when the parts are in the adjustment shown.
Various changes in the details of the construction may be adopted without departing from the scope oit' the invention as deiined in the claims.
What I claim is 1. In a lock, a latch bolt, inside and outside hubs, clogging mechanism for the outside hub, a lever adapted to be actuated by said hubs for retracting said bolt, key mechanism for retracting said bolt by said lever, and means to dog said dogging mechanism as long as it dogs said outside hub, said means releasable by said lever when the latter is actuated by the inside hub; substantially as described.
2. In a lock, a latch bolt, inside and outside hubs, stop work associated with the outside hub, and including dogging and releasing Vslides respectively, a lever adapted to be actuated by said hubs to retract' said Y said hubs, stop work associated with the out-V side hub and including dogging and releasing slides respectively, and a walking beam member interconnecting said slides, a lever for engaging said walking beam member to dog the stop work, and means for shifting said lever out of its dogging position to release the stop work; substantially as described.
4. In a lock, a latch bolt, inside and outside hubs for retracting the same, said outside hub having a notch therein, a dogging slide having a portion to engage said notch, the dogging portion of said slide being of greater width than the outside hub so that said slide will dog said hub when the hubs are interchangecl to reverse the hand of the lock, and means :for dogging the dogging slide against movement from its dogging position; substantially as described.
5. In a lock, a latch bolt, inside and outside hubs, a lever for retracting said bolt by means oit' said hubs, a dogging slide for engaging the outside hub, a releasing slide, a walking beam connecting said dogging slide with said releasing slide, and a spring pressed dogging lever for engaging said walking beam controlled by said bolt retracting lever; substantially as described.
