3 Claims. (Cl. 112210) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stitch regulator and reversing mechanism for sewing machines.
Such invention has for its principal object mechanism of this character which is greatly simplified and especially adaptable in domestic low price type sewing machines.
More particularly the invention has for an object the provision for manually controlling the direction of operation of the feeding mechanism of a sewing machine together with mechanism for regulating the length of the stitch, which regulation may be accomplished while the machine is in motion as well as when it is idle.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:

In the low price sewing machine field it is desirable and, of course, necessary that the sewing machine embody a minimum number of parts arranged in a small and compact combination. To the accomplishment of this end my stitch regulator and reversing mechanism is preferably associated with a sewing machine of the type illustrated in United States Patent Office No. 2,532,790. Such a machine includes a base portion 10 from which projects the conventional arm 11. Such a machine further includes a main drive shaft 12 and a feed shaft 13 the latter designed and intended to operate the stitch forming and feeding mechanism.
As indicated herein my invention has to do with mechanism for reversing the operation of the feed shaft and regulating the length of the stitch.
Such mechanism in its preferred form of construction comprises a connecting rod 14, one end of which provides an open yoke 15. The opposite end of the connecting rod 14 by a link 16 is connected to one end of the feed shaft 13. The arms 17 of the yoke are operably disposed to embrace and engage a cam 18 mounted on the main shaft 12. This main shaft 12, as in the case of United States Letters Patent No. 2,532,790, is by means of a sprocket and chain arrangement 19 connected to a grooved block em- ICC what is commonly known in the art as a shuttle shaft. On the main shaft 12 is the usual driving fly wheel 20.
A carriage 21 in the form of a substantially rectangular block in side elevation, by means of a stud shaft 22 is pivotally connected to an adjacent wall 23 of the base portion 10. This block-21 provides an open groove 24 which extends lengthwise of the block and is adapted to have mounted therein a slide 25. This slide 25 by means of a pin 26 is pivotally connected to the connecting rod 14 adjacent its upper end portion.
In the front wall 27 of the base 10 there is provided a vertically extending slot 28. Movable in this slot 28 is an actuating arm 29 having one end fixedly connected as at 30, to the block 21. The outer end portion of this arm 29 is flattened to provide a finger piece 31 to facilitate grasping the end of the arm 29 between the fingers for manual adjustment relative to this slot 28.
The arm 29 projects through an opening formed in an elongated link 32. This link 32 provides an elongated slot 33 through which the shank 34 of a binder bolt 35' passes. The shank of this bolt projects through a slot 34 formed in a plate 35 fixed to the adjacent wall 27 of the base 10 as at 36, Fig. 2. This plate 35 has a vertically extending slot 37 which registers with the slot 28 formed in the wall 27 of the base portion 10.
The bolt 35 includes a nut 36 by which the bolt is held in an adjusted position with respect to the plate 35. When the binder bolt 35 is free to move relative to the plate 35 the fulcrum point of the link 32 may be varied to limit the degree of pivotal movement of the block 21 by manual movement of the arm 29 within the slots 28 and 37 thereby to vary the length of the stitch.
In this connection when the link 32 is in the position shown in full lines (Fig. 2), the length of the stitch will be relatively short whereas when the link 32 is in the position shown in the dot and dash line (Fig. 2), the stitch will be lengthened. The same is true when the link 32 is pivoted from a point above a horizontal line through the slot 33 to a point therebelow as shown in dotted lines (Fig. 2).
In'Fig. 1 the position of the parts is such that no movement is imparted to the connecting rod. Consequently operation of the feed shaft will remain idle.
.In Fig. 5 the position of the parts is such that reverse or anti-clockwise rotation is imparted to the feed shaft for backward feeding operation by the feeding mechanism of the sewing machine.
In Fig. 6 the position of the parts illustrated in Fig. 5 is such that forward or clockwise rotation is imparted to the feed shaft for forward feeding operation by the feeding mechanism of the sewing machine.
By this simple arrangement the feed mechanism may be reversed by the simple operation of adjusting the arm 29 relative to the slots 28 and 37. By an equally simple mechanism, the length of the stitch may be varied by the simple adjustment of the binder bolt 35 relative to the slot 33.
The parts of such mechanism may be made of such material as will require little or no machining, all of which tends to maintain a minimum cost of manufacture. A mechanism constructed in accordance with the foregoing description comprises a minimum number of parts easy of assembly and manufacture, thereby affording sale of a sewing machine at an economical price.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, with a feed shaft and a main shaft of a sewing machine, of a cam on said main shaft, a connecting rod having at one end thereof a yoke engaging and embracing said cam, a connection between the opposite end of said rod and said feed shaft, a grooved block pivotally carried-by a wall of said sewing machine, a slide mounted for movement in the groove of said block, a pivotal connection between the slide and'the rod, an arm carried by the grooved block and extending through an elongated vertically extending slot formed in a Wall of said sewing machine, an adjustable link having an opening at one end through which said arm projects and provided at its opposite end with an elongated slot, at substantially triangular shaped cover plate for said link and said wall slot carried by said wall and having formed therein a vertical slot twice the length of said slot of'said link and corresponding in length to said wall slot and through which said arm projects, said cover plate having a horizontal slot formed therein corresponding in length to the slot formed in said link, and a binder bolt positionable in said slots of said plate and said link for securing said link to said plate in a predetermined horizontal adjusted position and for securing said arm in a predetermined vertical position with respect to said plate.
2. The combination with a feed shaft and a main shaft of a sewing machine, of reversing mechanism for said feed shaft comprising an element providing operative connection between the main shaft and the feed shaft, a grooved member pivotally connected to a wall of the sewing machine, a slide mounted in the groove of said member for movement longitudinally with re- 3 spect thereto, a pivotal connection between said slide and said element, and means for adjusting said grooved block about its pivotal connection with said wall, said last named means including an arm carried by and extending from said block and extending through an elongated slot formed in a wall of said sewing machine, an adjustable link having an opening at one end through which said arm projects and provided at its opposite end with an elongated slot, a substantially triangular shaped cover plate for said link and said wall slot carried by said wall and having formed therein a vertical slot twice the length of said slot of said link and corresponding in length to said wall slot and through which said arm projects, said cover plate having a horizontal slot formed 4 therein corresponding in length to the slot formed in said link, and a binder bolt positionable in said slots of said plate and said link for securing said link to said plate in a predetermined horizontal adjusted position and for securing said arm in a predetermined vertical position with respect to said plate.
3. The combination with a feed shaft and a main shaft of a sewing machine, of reversing mechanism for said feed shaft comprising an element providing operative connection between the main shaft and the feed shaft, a grooved member pivotally connected to a Wall of the sewing machine, a slide mounted in the groove of said member for movement longitudinally with respect thereto, a pivotal connection between said slide and said element, means for adjusting said grooved block about its pivotal connection with said wall, said last named means including an arm carried by and extending from said block and extending through an elongated slot formed in a wall of said sewing machine, and means for varying the length of movement of said block adjusting means, said last-named means including an ad justable link having an opening at one end through which said arm projects and provided at its opposite end with an elongated slot, a substantially triangular shaped cover plate for said link and said wall slot carried by said wall and having formed therein a vertical slot twice the length of said slot of said link and corresponding inlength to said wall slot and through which said arm projects, said cover plate having a horizontal slot formed therein corresponding in length to the slot formed in said link, and a binder bolt positionable in said slots of said plate and said link for securing said link to said plate in a predetermined horizontal adjusted position and for securing said arm in a predetermined vertical position with respect to said plate.
