HAND-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,104, dated January 23, 18 83.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HARRISON NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Punches, and Ihereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of my invention is to construct such a punch in the simplest and most convenient possible form, avoiding projections which can catch in pockets, and having allthe operative parts so protected that they shall not be liable to injury or derangement.
To this end my invention consists in forming the punch of two jaws, hinged together at one end, constituting them levers of the third class, the female die being on one of them at its unhinged end, and each being provided with a chamber to inclose a lever of peculiar construction having its fulcrum on one of the jaws, and bearing against a spring and carrying the male die, and also operating to secure the jaws against separating beyond a given degree; and it consists, further, in certain details of construction and combinationsof parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy punch; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3a perspective view of the die detached.
A is one of the jaws, which is provided with 'an internal chamber,-'o, in which are one or more stops, it, which may either be cast with the jaw, as represented in the drawings, or consist of pins passing through the jaw, or which may be formed in any other convenient manner. At the outer end of this jaw is a transverse recess, i, covered by thefemale die, which consists of a dovetailed plate, 8, fitting a dovetailed recess in the edge of the jaw, to which it is further secured by a screw, and having a suitable orifice over the recess t for the passage of the male die.
B is the otherjaw, which is provided with a chamber, a. A projection, r, is formed on each side of this jaw to facilitate the pivoting ofthe internal lever, and the faces of the jaw A are correspondingly recessed to receive these pro- .jections. The two jaws are hinged together at one end, as shown at q, and both are hollowed out near the hinge to form the ring 1), for convenience in holding and carrying the device when not in actual use or for hanging it up. 5
C is the internal lever, pivoted to the jawB at 0, and consisting of the broad portion '12 extending into the chamber 2; of the jaw A, which chamber extends farther back than the chamber in the opposite jaw to accommodate 6:: this part of the lever, and the narrow portion m lying wholly within the chamber 2: of the jaw B, which chamber accordingly extends farther forward than the chamber o. The rear of this lever is hollowed out, as shown at l, inorder not to obstruct the ring 11.
Behind the fulcrum is a spring, It, of the form shown, or of any other suitable form,' bearing between the lever and the bottom of the chamber 12, whereby it tends to throw the rear arm of the lever up and the forward arm down. The portion of the rear arm which lies within the chamber 12 of thejaw A is provided with as many hook-like projections i as there are stops it in that chamber, and in such position as to catch upon the stops when the rar arm of the lever is thrown upward by the action of the spring It. It is also provided with a projection, h, at its extreme rear, the purpose of which will hereinafter be explained.
Upon the forward end of the lever is the die g, which I prefer to make detachable, in order that, if injured or if a different form is desired, it may readily be removed and replaced by another. A convenient mode of attaching 85 it is by forming upon itthe dovetailed projectionf, fitting a corresponding recess in the end of the lever, and securing it by means of a screw, 0. The construction and mode of attachment of the plate 8 render this quite as 0 readily removable.
To operate the device, the jaws are compressed by the hand, thus bringing them together, and at the same time throwing the rear arm of the lever C downward and the 5 forward arm, carrying the die, upward, causing the die to pass through the orifice in the plate 8. This movement incidentally carries the projections z backward and away from the stops u, since they follow thecurve of the top of ple, a chain of proper length connecting the jaws detachably secured to one of them. The mechanism shown and described, however, is far preferable.
- When it is desired to open the jaws wide apart to substitute a new die or to gain access to the interior for any other purpose, the projections t must of course be disengaged from the stops it and held so until the stops are beyond their reach. To effect this the jaws are brought together sufficiently to disengage the projections from the stops, and the projection h (which, as before stated, at such time extends within the ring) then held by the thumb or finger until the jaws are thrown apart. It pins or studs are used for the stops a, the top of the chamber 11 need nothave the configuration represented in the drawings, but may be simply arched in the same manner as the chamber 0; in the opposite jaw.
As before implied, it is not necessary that two projections t and two stops to be employed, as one such stop and projection will answer the purpose. It there are two or three,
they must of course all be behind the fulcrum. The jaws may each be cast in one piece, or each in two parts and riveted together. The
latter method has the advantage of avoiding coring. It will also be an advantage to make the edges of the jaws which come in contact with the hand rounded, to secure comfort in handling. This refers both to the outer edges and to the edges of the ring. The outer edges, if desired, may also be milled or otherwise roughened to give firmness to the grasp.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the jaw A, carrying the female die and having the chamber o,jaw B, hinged to the jaw A, and having the chamher a, pivoted internal lever, O, carrying the male die, a suitable spring, k, and mechanism for locking the said jaws together to prevent their separating beyond a given degree, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the jaw A, carrying the female die, and having the chamber v and one or more stops, a, jaw B, hinged to the jaw A, and having the chamber v, pivoted internal lever, (J, carrying the male die, and provided with one or more projections, 'i, to engage the stop or stops u, and a suitable spring, k, substantially as described. I
3. The combination of the jaw A, carrying the removable female die 8, and having the chamber 22 and one or more suitable stops, a, jaw B, hinged to the jaw A, and having the chamber 0, pivoted internal lever, 0, carrying the detachable die 9, and provided with the rear projection, h, and one or more projections,
t, to engage the stop or stops u, and the spring 70, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
