Description

July 27, 1954 L, A. MocARTHY DISPLAY BOX Filed Jan. 4, 1952 INVENTR. izcy MC Cari/zy ATTORNEYS.
Patented July 27, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPLAY BOX Lucy A. McCarthy, Taunton, Mass., assignor to Swank, Inc., a corporation of Delaware 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a display box, and is particularly adapted for displaying small articles, such as jewelry or the like.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an ornamental arrangement to dress up a hinged box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a display which may be made particularly appropriate for certain seasonal days, such as Christmas or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ornamental display which will fold into the box to be completely housed and protected when the box is closed, but which will extend into its desired position when the box is opened.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ornamental display which will be of extremely simple form and inexpensive to produce.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
With reference to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the box with the ornamental display incorporated therein.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the box in closed position with the ornamental display therein.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale showing the manner in which the display is secured in the box.
In proceeding with this invention, I utilize a box which has a body section and a cover section hinged thereto in such a manner that they will swing through substantially 90 degrees to open position. The box usually is provided with some sort of a pad for enhancing the appearance of the merchandise within the box, and I attach my display by placing portions of it beneath the ornamental pads.
With reference to the drawings, I designates the body section and II the cover section of the box. A hinge I2 joins these sections together along their back wall in such a manner that the cover may swing up through substantially ninety degrees from its closed position to its open position, the arrangement being such that the cover will maintain itself in substantially this right angular relationship to the body section, as shown in Figure 1, permitting the display of merchandise which may be in the body section.
A pad I4 is located in the body section upon which the merchandise to be displayed is usually mounted. The cover section is equipped with a pad I5, having a cloth covering I6 which is held in position in a usual manner.
My ornamental member is designated generally I'I, and in this instance comprises a piece of flockcoated paper, cut out in generally a frame shape simulating a Christmas tree, having serrated edges I8, and an open center I 9 so as to form a strip outline. The tree trunk designated 2i) is of a length to be folded beneath the pad I4, as at 2| (see Figure 3) while the top of the tree 22 is folded beneath the pad I5, as at 23. When the box is in closed position, the intermediate portions 24 of the ornament will be folded inwardly of the box, as shown in Figure 2, whereas when the box is swung on its hinge to open position so the free edges 25 and 2t of the sections are separated to their full ninety degree extent, the ornament II will be drawn taut between these edges. The length of the tree will be substantially the same as the distance between the free edge 25 and free edge 26 to maintain the ornament stretched across the box when in this open position, thus causing the contents of the box to be viewed through the ornament in this particular case, and lending to an arrangement that will suggest of some particular day such as Christmas in this instance.
I claim:
A display box comprising a body section, a cover section, means to hinge said sections together along their rear edges to swing from closed position through substantially an arc of ninety degrees to open position, means to display an article in the body section, and an ornamental member of flexible material secured to the front edges of the sections and of a length substantially the distance between the front edges of the sections when in open position, said member comprising a strip of material forming an ornamental frame with an open center allowing the display in the body section to be viewed or removed through said open center.
