ATTORNE Patented Dec. 22, 1953 COMBINATION CIGARETTE SUPPORTING AND EXTINGUISHING DEVICE g,
Harry L. Bachman, Sr., Columbus, Ohio Application November 22, 1950, Serial No. 197,095
The present invention relates generally to smokers articles, and more specifically to an improved combination cigaret holder or supporting tray and an extinguishing device.
In the past, numerous types of devices have been proposed for use in supporting and extinguishing lighted cigarets, cigars, and the like to prevent continued burning of the cigaret or cigar, and the possibility of the same dropping from an ash tray or other support onto a table surface or floor with consequent fire hazards. However, previously known devices of this type generally comprised a tubular socket into which the lighted end of a cigaret was inserted to smother the fire and thereby extinguish the cigaret upon the insertion thereof within the device. Such devices were entirely sufficient for the purpose of extinguishing a lighted cigaret, but in all constructions of which I am aware, the burning end of the cigaret, prior to extinguishment, was permitted to smolder with consequent condensation of acid tars upon the paper of the cigaret adjacent the burning end thereof. It will be manifest that such condensation occurring from the enclosure of the burning end ofthe cigaret rendered the cigaret worthless for reuse due to the bitter taste imparted by the acid tars collecting in the paper and at the burned end of the cigaret. For this reason, extinguishers which function to snub or smother the fired end of the cigaret function merely as an extinguisher only, and substantially preclude reuse of the cigaret after extinguishment.
It follows, therefore, that the primary object of the present invention is to provide a cigaret supporting tray and extinguisher into which a lighted cigaret may be inserted or laid at rest, and which functions to maintain combustion of the cigaret for a relatively short period of time, permitting the cigaret to be removed from the tray within a short interval fromthe time it is initially positioned therein without requiring the same to be relit, but which functions to finally extinguish a burning cigaret after prolonged insertion within the tray without causing condensation of acid tars on that portion of the cigaret adjacent the burning end thereof.
Anotherfobject of the invention is to provide a combined cigaret holding tray and extinguishing device which functions to maintain the portion adjacent the lighted end thereof in spaced relation to the inner walls of a tubular chamber which functions to eventually smother the cigaret without causing an accumulation of moisture or condensates upon the paper body of the cigaret.
1 Claim. (Cl. 131-256) A further object of the invention is to provide a cigaret support having means to extinguish the cigaret if left upon the support for a'predetermined time, but which additionally is provided with a means to maintain combustion of the cigaret for a relatively short period of time to enable the smoker to initially position the cigaret upon the tray and thereafter remove the same at normal intervals to continue smoking, while at the same time eliminating the fear that the cigaret will continue toburn and perhaps drop from the tray to cause a fire hazard.
For a further and more detailed understanding of the present invention, and the various additional objects and advantages realized therefrom, reference is made to the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a medial longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through a combined cigaret holder and extinguishing device formed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a detailed fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through a slightly modified form of cigaret holder and extinguishing device;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the holder and extinguisher disclosed in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through my improved cigaret holder and extinguisher and showing a removable moistureadsorbent sleeve arranged to collect condensates.
In accordance with the present invention, I have found that by inserting the lighted end of a cigaret within a cylindrical tubular sleeve having an internal diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of the cigaret, and also having a relatively narrow longitudinal slot formed therein, the cigaret will continue to burn for a relatively short period of time, say in the neighborhood of one minute, without being immediately extinguished. Also, due to the relative spacing between the outer surface of the lighted end portion of the cigaret and the inner wall of the tubular sleeve, vapors given off from the cigaret due to the heat occasioned by the burning end thereof are dissipated from the tubular sleeve or condense upon the inner side walls thereof rather T than upon the outer surface or paper of the cigaret. Hence, as the cigaret extinguishing progresses, the'previously' burnt end thereof is free Referring now to the drawing, and particularly to the form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1-3, the numeral l designates generally a fiat supporting base from which arises an arcuate supporting bracket ll. Carried upon the upper arms of the bracket 1 l is an elongated tray member 42 which is formed to provide a relatively shallow arcuate cross-sectional configuration for the support of the body portion of a cigaret indicated at 13. Secured to one end of the tray member I2, by any suitable means, such as welding or soldering, is a cylindrical tubular sleeve M whose internal diameter is slightly larger than the external diameter of the "cigaret 153'. The
outer end portion of the tray member !2 extends slightly within the sleeve 14, as at l-5,to provide a raised support with reference to the lower portion of the sleeve [4 for the burning endof'the cigaret l3. i
The tubular sleeve member I4 is formed in its lowenregion with alongitudinally extending open slot 1.6 which functions to admit .airra'dially into the tubular sleeve sufficient to sustain combustion of the cigaret for arelativelyshort periodof time, andto prevent immediate extinguishment thereof upon insertion within the .sleeve. The size of the slot l-fi may be preselected to vary within limits the burning time of the cigaret after insertion within the sleeve, but is of .an insuihcient width to furnish sufficient air to sustain .prolongedand-rapidcombustion of the tobacco products comprising the cigaret. .In this connection, it is important to note that after initial insertion of the burning-end of the cigaret within the tubular sleeve M, the same will, depending upon the size of the slot 48, remain lighted for .a period of from thirty to ninety seconds, but substantially no smoke will emanate .:from the :cigaret after insertion within the sleeve. Thisphenomenon isexplained on the theory that the burning oi the cigaret is progressively decreased due to the insufiiciencyof combustionair passing :into the tubular sleeve, :and hence substantially no smokin is encountered.
Due "to the radially ofiiset relation of 'the outer end of :the tray member 12 with respect to the lower surface of the sleeve l4, and also 'due to :the diflerence in 'diameterof the sleeve and the 'cigaret, the outer :surface of the burning-end of the cigaret will remaininspaced relation to the inner wall of "the :sleeve M to thus prevent the 01).- densation of vapors comprising :acid tars .upon the ci'garet wrapper. Alf the cigaret 3-215 permitt'editosremain within the sleeve 14 foraperiod of time :sufficient to eflect extinguishment, the same-may thereafter be removed from the :sleeve and tray and relit so that the remaining un burned portion of the :cig'aret maybe "consumed. -It will be :manifest that ithe prevention of condensates accumulatingiupon the outer surface of theburn'ed end of the .cigaret enables "the same to be-reused without encountering the distaste- 'ful e'ffects normally occasioned 'by such .condensates. "If the burning :end portion of .a :cigaret -were permitt'ed to lieagainst the :inner surface of "the sleeve M, as with prior constructions, undesired moisture and condensates 'would immediately accumulate upon :the outer 'sur'face a'o'f the cigaret, rendering the same unsuitable for reuse.
I have'further found that itis advantageous to provide a removable liner sleeve I 1 formed from a suitable moisture-adsorbent fibrous material, and arranged to 'be removably inserted'within the sleeve 1'4 adjacent to" the inner "wall "thereof and the sleeve member [4 are of integral construction with the inner end of the sleeve portion 14 formed with a restricted shoulder or collar 18 which functions to hold the burning end 'portion of a :cigaret in spaced relation to the inner Walls of the sleeve member M. The relative spacing between the outer diameter of the cigaret J3 and the inner wall of the sleeve [4 is maintained in this modified form by the ofiset relation of the collar It with respect .to the remainder rof thesleeve 1-4.
While the device has ben described as aselfsupporting unit,.it willbe-manifest that thesame may be :mounteclin association withanash tray lvithout departing from the spirit of the invenion.
.In view of the foregoing, it will beseen that the present-invention providesa usefuland mechanically efiicient-device ior supporting burning cigarets in a mannerto prevent the accumulation of undesired condensatesithereon, thus permitting reuse of the unburned portion of the cigaret after extinguishment thereof. Further, the device provides an extinguisher which assures against ioontinued burning of the cigaret, yet permits burning thereof for apredetermined relatively short interval of time commensurate with the interval of actual smoking .by the'person. Further, the :present combined holder and extinguisher prevents the undesired smoking of the cigaret when placed therein prior to extim guishment, thus reducing the amount or smoke and eliminating entirely the undesired smoldering of the *cigaret :as normally 'occasionedwh'en the same is placed within an ordinary .ash tray.
