Description

Feb. 17. 1925.
J. H. SANDIDGE CIGAR. cmmz'r'rs. OR THE LIKE murmurs Invemor gi J 1.4 B 1 Cigar, Cigarette, or the like Pasadena", 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN HOWARD SANDIDGE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOB 0F ONE-HALF TO PHILIP GROSSHAN, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CIGAR, CIGARETTE, OR THE LIKE EITINGUISHEB.
Application filed January 3, 1921. Serial No. 434,809.
To all wlz om it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HowAm) SAN- mnon, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have 'invented new and useful Im rovements in xtinguishers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, which are a part of this specification. his invention relates to certaln new and useful improvements in what may be termed an extinguisher or mufiier for burnin cigarettes, cigars, cheroots, or the like, iiereinafter termed tobacco cylinder. I It is the present custom of smokers to lay the stubs or butts of burning tobacco cylinders within some receptacle such as an ash tray or the like, and as the average tobacco cylinder will practically always continue burning until it consumes itself, unless having been extinguished, repulsive and objectionable odors generally are given off by the burning stub making it very disagreeable for the persons in the room.
With the above and other inherent objections in mind, it is one of the objects of this invention to provide a device of the class described so desi ed and constructed that the lighted end 0 a tobacco cylinder may be projected therein and substantially instantaneously extinguished, whereby all offensive and repugnant odors, that would exist were the tobacco cylinder to be placed in a receptacle without having first been extinguished,
are eliminated.
A further object of this invention is to provide a substantially horizontally bored member of a diameter slightly greater than that of the tobacco cylinders to be extinguished whereby the lighted ends of the toacco cylinders may be extended into said bore and the cylinder supported thereby while the burning end is being extinguishe A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of the class described which may be in the form of a tube capable of attachment to any support, may be in the form of a paper weight, or which may be combined with an ash traly. I
With the above and ot or objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as, hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the ap pended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawin ,I have illustrated one complete example 0 the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical ap lication of the principles thereof, and in w ich:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a paper weight or the like embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a side view thereof part in elevation and part in section;
Figure 3 is an end view thereof;
Figure 4 is a' side view illustrating a slightly modified form of my invention; and
Figure 5 is a side view of a still further modification of the invention.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanymg drawing in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views:
In Figures 1, 2, and 3, my invention has been illustrated as combined with a form of paper weight which consists of a rectangular base portion 6 having a central longitudinally extending top portion or projection 7 which is horizontally bored, as at 8, and each end of the block or base is recessed to provide article or ash receiving pockets 9. The diameter of the bore 8 is preferabl of a diameter slightly greater than that o the tobacco cylinders 10 with which my invention is adapted to be utilized, and the ends of the bore 8 are decidedly flared outwardly, as at 11, for convenience in guiding the lighted ends 12 of the tobacco cylinders in said bore. V
In Figure 4 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of my invention which consists of a combination ash tray 13, lighted tobacco cylinder extinguisher 14 and a match box carrying member 15. The extinguishin device is in the form of an open ended tu e horizontally supported from the tray 13 by a support 16, and the end openings of the tube 14 are decidedly flared, as at 17 for convenience in projecting the lighted ends 12 of the tobacco cylinders therein. The match box carrying member 15 is preferably mounted upon the top surface 0 the tube 14 and is adapted to receive a match box 18 of preferably the safety match type.
I In Figure 5, a still further modified form of my invention is illustrated which con-' I sists of the tube 14 provided with a screw, or'any other desired fastening member, 19
I. most-,"but ten seconds are required from th time the burning end of a tobacco cylinder is inserted into the extinguishing member opening to the time when the cylinder light is completely extinguished. In all of thetests made, the ashes on the burnt ends of the cylinders have been of a hard crystallized nature in contra-distinction to their usual soft fluffy-like nature.
From the various tests of my improved device it would seem that the burning end of the tobacco cylinder, when projected into the bore of the extinguishing tube, gives oil a carbon monoxid gas which completely envelops the cylinder lighted end. This gas,
in which no combustion can exist, instantaneously extinguishes the fire of the tobacco cylinder.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be readily apparent that my invention is adapted for use in connection with all, forms of cigars, cigarettes, cheroots, or the like, and it will be understood that the term tobacco cylinder, as employed in the claim, is to be construed asmeaning all lfolfms of cigars, cigarettes, cheroots, or the 1 e.
What I claim as my invention is:
An article of manufacture comprising a 'member having a substantially horizontal open ng extending therethrough, said opening being of such proportions as to loosely receive the burning end ofa tobacco cylinder to be extinguished, said tobacco cylinder being insertable into said opening from either end of the member. In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
JOHN HOWARD SANDIDGE.
