Description

Sept 1953 B. N. VOELCKER 2,650,570
PENHOLDER Filed Dec. 5, 1951 Billy N. Voelcker INVENTOR.
BY gum Patented Sept. 1, 1953 UNITED j STATES TENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in fountain pen holders or stands of the desk type and has for its primary object to provide, in the manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means for positively preventing the grip portion of the pen from being coated with ink when said pen is inserted, and subsequently smearing the thumb and fingers of the user when said pen is removed from the holder.
Another very important object of the invention is to provided a device of the aforementioned character comprising unique means for receiving and guiding the writing end of the pen without touching and smearing the entrance or mouth portion of the holder with ink to be picked up by the grip portion and later transferred to the fingers of the user.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a fountain pen holder of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use, compact, attractive in appearance, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, showing a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention in use.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section through the device with the pen omitted.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of the reciprocating pen point cup.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view through a modified form of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 6 designates a body of suitable shape, size and material comprising a flat lower face I. Secured by screws 8 on the flat bottom I of the body 6 is a metallic base plate 9 having adhesively secured therebeneath a pad III of felt or any other suitable material.
Extending at an inclination through the body 6 is a bore or socket II comprising a reduced upper end portion or mouth I2. The socket I I is for the reception of the writing end portion of a fountain pen I3.
The cylindrical socket II has formed longitudinally therein diametrically opposite grooves or ways I4 which extend from the lower end of said socket to the shoulder I5 provided by the reduced upper portion I2. A base member I6 is mounted on the plate 9 in the lower portion of the socket I I.
The end portions of a bar I1 are slidably engaged in the grooves HI. Fixed on the bar I! is a cup I8 of plastic, metal, or any other suitable material for the reception of the point I9 and the nib 20 of the fountain pen I3. The cup I8 is further provided with an opening 2| which accommodates the pen point I 9. A light coil spring 22 is mounted on the base It and engaged beneath the bar I1 for yieldingly urging the cup I8 upwardly in the socket II.
Suitable means may, if desired, be provided for releasably securing the pen I3 in the holder against the action of the light coil spring 22. In the embodiment shown, a plurality of spring fingers 23 are mounted in the reduced mouth portion I2 of the socket II for engagement with an annular bead 24 which is fixed on the pen I3.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when the pen I3 is not in the holder, the guide cup I8 is yieldingly supported in the uppermost portion I2 of the socket II by the light coil spring 22. This is shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing. When the fountain pen is to be mounted in the holder, the pen point I9 and the nib 20 are engaged in the cup I8 with said point projecting through the opening 2I. Thus, as the pen I3 is lowered into the holder against the tension of the coil spring 22, it is guided by the cup I8 and the elements l9 and 20 are prevented from touching any part of the holder other than said cup.
In the modification shown in Figure 5 of the drawing, the grooves or ways I4 are of a size and shape to accommodate a pair of coil springs 25 which are engaged beneath the end portions of the bar [1. In other respects, the construction and operation of this modification is substantially similar to the embodiment shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
It is believed that the many advantages of a fountain pen holder constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A pen holder comprising a body having a substantially cylindrical socket therein for the reception of the writing end portion of a pen, said socket having diametrically opposite, longitudi nal grooves therein, a bar having its end portions slidably engaged in the sockets, a guide for the reception of the point of the pen mounted (in said bar, coil springs in the grooves engaged. beneath the bar for yieldingly urging the cup outwardly and means in the socket for releasably securing the pen therein against the action of said coil springs.
