As soon as the coiling is at an end, the rotation of the spool 5 is at an end and it is sufficient to connect the end of the wire In that is being coiled to the nearest radial arm 3 in order to prevent any unwinding of the wire and the consequent collapse of the annulus formed, chiefly if the wire is a steel or thelike wire showing a certain resilience.
The drum 8 of the spool 5 is then caused to shrink as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6; the wire annulus I is thus held only through the skeleton 4 of the drum of the auxiliary spool. The system including the wire annulus l0 and the auxiliary spool may thus be removed without any effort being required and without the annulus I0 collapsing; the attaching of said annulus is performed subsequently outside the machine when the latter has already been started again after positionin on the spool of a further auxiliary spool similar to the one referred to precedingly.

It should be remarked that in the embodiment disclosed, the second removable flange 12 of the spool 5 is of the conventional type as fully apparent from Figs. 3 and 5. In a modification, it may carry a skeleton as shown in Figs. '7 and 8, similar to the first skeleton associated with the removable flange 6. The radial arms 3a of this second skeleton are bent at their ends 4a so as to register with the inturned ends of the arms of the first skeleton, as shown in'Fig. 7, or'else, they are fitted inside them telescopically as shown in Fig. 8.
Obviously, the number of radial arms in the auxiliary spool or spools may be selected as desired.
Obviously, moreover, my invention is by no means limited to the single embodiment disclosed by way of example and it includes all the modifi-' cations falling within the scope or appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A coil carrier comprising a drum and two flanges one of which at least isremovable, a skeleton spool including a plurality of convergent interconnected arms bent inwardly, at right angles at equal distances from the point of convergence of said, arms, the inner bent parts of said arms bearing against the periphery of the drum, said skeleton spool being adapted to carry, independently of the drum and flanges, a wire coiled round the bent parts of the arms with the end surface of the coiled wire bearing against the outer convergent parts of said arms.
2. A coil carrier comprising a radially expansible drum and two flanges one of which at least is removable, a skeleton spool including a plurality of convergent interconnected arms bent inwardly at right angles at equal distances from the point of convergence of said arms, the inner bent parts of said arms bearing against the periphery of the drum, said skeleton spool being tions of said arms engaging releasably the radial grooves in the flange and the inner bent ends of the arms engaging releasably the peripheral longitudinal grooves of thedrum, said skeleton being adapted to carry independently of the flanges and drum a coiled Wireround the bent parts of the arms with one side of the coil bearing against the outer'convergent parts of said arms.
5. A coil carrier comprising an inwardly collapsible drum provided on its outer periphery with at least one longitudinal groove parallel with it axis, flanges coaxial with the drum of which one is provided with radial grooves facing the drum, at least one flange being removably "secured to the drum, a skeleton spool including a plurality of convergent interconnected arms bent inwardly at right angles at points at equal distances from the point of convergence of said arms, the convergent outer portions of said arms engaging releasably the radial grooves in the flange and the inner bent ends of the arms engaging releasably the peripheral longitudinal grooves of the drum, said skeleton being adapted to carry independently of the flange and drum a coiled wire round the bent parts of the arms with one side of the coil bearing a ai st the outer convergent parts of said arms.
6. A coil carrier comprising a drum provided on its outer. periphery with at least one longitudinal groove parallel with its axis, flanges coaxial with the'drum of which one is provided with radial grooves facing the drum, a skeleton spool the arms engaging releasably the peripheral longitudinal grooves of the drum, said skeleton being adapted to carry independently of the flange and drum a coiled wire round the bent parts of the arms with one side of the coil bearing against the outer convergent parts of said arms.
7. A coil carrier comprising a drum and two flanges one of which at least is removable, two skeleton spools including a plurality of convergent interconnected arms bent inwardly at right angles at points at equal distances from the point of convergence of said arms, the inner bent arm parts of each skeleton spool being directed towards the other skeleton spool and bearing against the periphery of the drum, said skeleton spools beingladapted to carry,.independently of the drum and flanges, a wire coiled round the bent parts of the arms with the end surfaces of the coiled wire bearing against the outer convergent parts of said skeleton spool arms.
8. In, combination with a carrier drum, the provision of at least one independent skeleton spool adapted to be removably fitted over said drum and to carry a coiled wire, said skeleton spool comprising a plurality of convergent inter-' connected arms and extensions of said arms bent inwardly at right angles at points at equal distances from the point ofconvergence of said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 7 Number arms and adapted to engage the periphery of the drum.
